Wireless Newbie Can't connect up

#1 Post by Uncletoad » Sat Oct 23, 2004 4:48 pm

I'm trying to hook my T42 up with my network. I have a Dlink DI-624, IBM a/b/g card. Using Access Connections I get signal and then it never gives me an IP configuration. Using WPA-PSK or a wide open system . It worked before I ran the Network Wizard on the Desktop and the Notebook. Now it's dead. Any suggestions?

This same thing happened to me this week while I was traveling. The wireless radio box was not clicked, which would not allow it to connect to an active wireless signal.

Try going to control panel, network/internet connections, click onnetwork connections, right click on wireless network connections, click properties, click configure and make sure the wireless radio box is clicked on.

If that doesn't work, you might want to call D-Link, they have been very helpful to me when I set up my wireless network at home.

The T42 is getting a very strong signal. When I leave the wireless complety undefended, open, with no security protcol and SSID broadcasting all over the neighborhood I get a good strong stable connection. Every time I try to add WEP or WMA-PSK I have signal but no IP address is assigned. Wiped out the configurations and redid them. Updated the IBM a/b/g to the current driver, updated firmware on DI-624 to current version. More ideas?

I think with WEP or WPA on the wireless range will be less.

Did you test closer to your wireless router?

Did you enter a correct WEP key for your laptop?

I have been messing with this about 2 feet from my router. I have entered the keys many times thinking I'm doing something wrong. It does seem that they don't stay in the machine. When I return to the box the number of characters is very different than it should be. It's like they aren't being saved.

Could it be that you have mixed up 64 vs 128 bit encryption keys?

Connections

Not the problem but that's probably the kind of thing that's happening. I suspect user error. Any other ideas? FWIW I've got the same router in two different locations (home, Office 4 miles away). The same thing is true for both places. Get excellent connections with no security. Secuity of any kind wont allow IP configuration.

No SP2, brand new IBM build. No firewalls on. Excellent questions again.

It sounds like your WEP configuration to me. I don't have a D-Link router but I do have a D-Link DWL-122 and I have to use the D-link configuration utility that came with it to change my WEP key - can't use Windows. Maybe your router has a similar situation.

WEP settings was the right clue. I was using 64 bix Hex codes but was using a couple characters outside of A-F and 0-9. As soon as I got that right it worked great. You'd think they'd write that program to not let you save stupid stuff like that. The connection is now smoking. Works great. Thanks all!
