T42: questions about passwords !
T42: questions about passwords !
hi there
I'd like to secure my computer to make it impossible to use for a thief.
I do not really want to make the data access impossible; my data wont be enough important
I plan to set a power-on password:
- after 3 wrong passwords, the computer is blocked and I should give the supervisor passwors ?
- if we're asked to enter the supervisor password, do I have a limited number of try ? if yes, is the T42 blocked and good for a mainboard replacement ?
- as I do not need to secure my data, is it important to set a HD-password ?
- if I set a HD password, and crash my T42, is there a possibility to acces the data on every other computer ?
- is the HD impossible to read after 3 wrong passwords ?
thanks for your advice guys

Use a power on password and a hard drive password and make them the same (for ease of startup). Use a random combination of numbers and letters.
Make sure you have strong passwords for all the userids in Windows including the Administrator userid (that is often forgotten). Make sure Guest, Help Assistant and Support are disabled.
Use a strong antivirus and firewall application and keep them updated. I like Symantec, others like different products. Choose your own poison, but do it.
Install Ad Aware by Lavasoft and keep it updated. Check for spyware often.
The reason for including software in security is that trojans can be installed to disable your security, so be very careful.

I don't know about the T42's, but on my T22 you had three chances to enter the password, and if you didn't get it you would have to reboot and start over. It never locked you out after a certain amount of time. Just don't forget the password, or it will be an expensive mistake!
Hope I was of some help!
