Regarding the OP, since the T4x and T6x series are the thinnest and lightest TP's, I'd recommend sticking with one of those. No one wants to lug around a 7 lb. R series.
Regarding the video chip problem on the T4x series, I do not believe anyone really knows how much or little it takes to liberate the GPU. Perhaps placing a hot (just used) T4x in your backpack and biking or walking to your dorm is enough, I just don't think we have scientific results on that yet.
What I can recommend is picking up a T43, they do not have the issue. In fact, if you pick up a T43 with Intel integrated video (vs. an ATI GPU), it would be most unlikely an issue.
While the T43, is a little louder, it's also a little faster with a faster bus and the fastest Pentium M's.
Finally, the T43 chassis was beefed up by about 5 oz. Presumably to limit flex. The louder fan (which can be controlled with software) may be worth the piece of mind. All T4x's are close in price (except for the T4xp's!)
Best of luck, welcome to the forum, let us know what you do, good luck in school, etc., etc., etc.
