Mastercard Discount?

#1 Post by misterpeachy » Wed May 26, 2004 1:50 am

Exactly what criteria must one fulfill to satisfy the Mastercard Discount? Do you only need to buy the laptop with a Mastercard or must you be a special type of member or something? Where's the official webpage for this section of IBM?

The link I used was:

http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... logId=-840

and I just used a MasterCard, it worked just fine.
Got a great price.

Good Luck

You mean I could have simply paid with my MasterCard instead of my Amex and I'd have gotten my DYU for $500 cheaper?

Oh but I have a case of the @$$ now...

Methinks a system shall get returned soon.

I could have added a 9-Cell battery and an extra ac adapter to the order and I'd still come in less than the sticker I paid.

You could have gotten the same discount with your AMEX card by going through the AMEX homepage and clicking on shopping.

IBM has a "30 day pricing guarantee" or something

i called them up and asked them to discount it, and they did. basiclaly if they offer it at a lower price within 30 days, you can call them and they'll credit you the difference

My mistake, the link is only accessible through the Small Business Dashboard. But, if you have almost any AMEX card, they'll pricematch the MC price. You might have to give them the URL of the price when you call them, but they won't argue about it.

Very strange! I just used it about two weeks ago! Now it's gone and when I attempt to go there via my history folder I get:

Error 500
An error has occured while processing request:http://www-1.ibm.com/gold/portal/servlet/cs/Login

IBM [censored] off at AMEX??? Ah well, they'll still pricematch on anything so it doesn't matter and you still get the automatic warranty extension.

With some AMEX cards, primarily Gold and Platinum, any purchase you charge to the card automatically doubles the product's warranty, up to an additional year. For a Thinkpad with a 3 year warranty this is of little benefit as it would just add a fourth year to the warranty period.

But for those Thinkpads with a 1 year warranty, it's a nice benefit. I've had cause to take advantage of the additional warranty on several purchases, most notably a digital camera and an aviation noise cancelling headset. In both instances the costs of repair were greater than the cost of replacing the item and AMEX refunded my original purchase price.

The digital camera refund was quite a "gift"! After 23 months of steady use, the 2MP camera I spent $419 for could be replaced with a better one for under $200 and Olympus wanted more than $250 to repair it. I took my $419 refund and bought a 5MP replacement!

Almost all of the silver, gold and Platinum cards from the other card companies have similar "Purchase Protection" plans.

exteneded warranty usually does not apply to computers. It says so specifically in the T&C's.

When I've gone through this link, I notice that there is no "Let me build it" option. Since the configuration I want is not a standard one listed in the T series model list of the MasterCard area, is there a way I can get the configuration I want with the discount? Maybe by placing a phone order? Any feedback would be appreciated.

For reference, the base configuration model number I want that was given after I built my own in the regular (non-MC discount area) section was 2378EYU. The specs are: T42, 1.8GHz, 15" SXGA+, 64MB ATI Mobility RADEON 9600. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Use Discover link, checkout with AMEX + expiration

#16 Post by aamsel » Sun May 30, 2004 12:44 am

1.) I used the Discover Card link, then noticed that it will let you checkout with AMEX, or appears to, didn't finish the transaction yet. Didn't know if I needed to call a sales rep to do it and not be questioned???
2.) When does the Discover/Visa/Mastercard 15 percent promotion end??
Thanks,
Andrew

Mastercard: Offer Expires Dec 31, 2004
Discover: Couldn't figure it out.

I dont know if this is from some online source or where, but it doesn't look like the very detailed list of T&C's that have come in the past year or six months with the cards. On those T&C's, they have very details lists of itesm not covered, whereas this one dosn't really list any particular items at all.

I'll try to find one somewhere and scan, it is unfortunatly, usually the thing people throw away.

As I said, that's the specific language in the AMEX T&C taken from their secure website. Link You'll probably have to login to see the page.

I don't know about similar plans offered by other cards, although i'm sure I could find the T&Cs for my other cards as I don't usually throw them away.

I am re-asking this question:
If I follow the VISA or DISCOVER links to the IBM site, and put a system in my basket, when I go to checkout, I am asked which credit card I want to use. If I chose AMEX, will it work, will the sale go through, or will it get kicked out?
Anyone know, or have you done it.
(yes, I know that I can call a rep and get it price-matched. Just wanted to know if I can do it online with AMEX)???
Thanks,
Andrew

orders at ibm go through an audit process occasionally..

but being that ibm is so big that morrows rule applies in spades, strange things do happen..
and i suppose this is one of them..

for instance, on express models, my discount from sales is WAY WAY less than the 15% you can get by trying to spoof the discover discount with an amex CC..

for some strange reason they have those on that site..

i asked one of my sales guys and the best he could come up with was "HUH!?, hmmm, uhh Duhhh, there must be some strange deal with that"
reason i asked is i would be delighted to get that large a discount on those 2378 and 2379 machines..

c'est laVie..
can't win'em all..
but a few would be nice.. :-)

Well, it looks like I may be out of luck. After speaking with the sales folks today, the MC (as well as various other discount programs offered) only apply to select systems. I may try calling a sales guy to see the best price possible on my configuration and make reference to the MC discount to see what they can offer.
