Using a 2nd HDD in Ultra Bay Slim

At first I didn't think this was possible, since I am new to owning a laptop.

Having a hard drive mounted in such a way, is it actually slower than having it installed internally?

I would like to use it. Can I launch Windows or Linux from that 2nd drive or is it only for expanding storage?

It IS installed internally on the secondary IDE channel, so it's equally fast. You can boot from this drive by changing BIOS settings.
