T42 problem

#1 Post by dbsmcfc » Tue Oct 26, 2004 2:10 am

I have bought the IBM T42 this June (don't remember the exact model name, Intel Centrino 1.5gHz ATi 7500...) but there is a problem occured quite frequently when I use the computer to run a lot of program or simply leave it alone for a while, the system will not respond to my action. I can still see the mouse icon but cannot move it, everthing seems to freeze. Is it cause by the over-heat(as suggested by some of my friend) or other reasons?
Pls Help, ThX ^^"

could be one of several causes..

most likely, software..

did you load something new just before this happened..??

or if this has been an ongoing problem, and you believe it is heat related, have you checked to be sure the fan is running..?

more detail will help pinpoint the root cause..
whether it is a hardware or software issue..

System hangs can be caused by bad memory boards also...Have you added memory? Take if so, take it out and see what happens. If not, try removing and replacing the original memory board.

Details on how to - the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

the fans is definitely running while the system hangs
so i think there is nothing to do with the fan
and i don't recall adding any new software that cause it
I have already restore and format my system
the problem is kinda solved, but after a while it seems to happen again

Memory chips are not really considered as 'software' - these are small circuit boards upon which are mounted the memory chips. These, as with 99.9% of everything that exists on this planet, are not always perfect and can cause problems similar to that which you describe.

My advice would be to either send the unit back to IBM for them to check, or find someone with a similar machine, swap the memory and see if the problem follows the change of board...

I added memory to my machine, and it was patently obvious when I removed the suspect board that this was in fact the cause of the problem - no more hang-ups etc.

i tried the memory one
and nothing is wrong with my ram
so i think i will better format my system
and this time without adding many softwares
see if it is caused by the softwares
anyway
thx u guys

Check to make sure that you do not have BOTH Windows and IBM power saving features turned on. They can conflict and cuase problems like this.
