I had 4 different D600 - Ok, different machines, but same manufacturer - And I had to get a ThinkPad in order to do work - My machines crashed almost daily and they got really hot...

I personally don't recomend Dell laptops to anyone, anymore.

Get a ThinkPad - You'll know where the extra money went...

Apples & Oranges my friend, the 700m is a 12" wide screen display sub notebook. the T42 is a 14.1 or 15" notebook. Build quality between IBM & Dell there's no comparison.

If the T42 is only $200 more then the Dell is severly overpriced. Last week I paid $750 for a new 700m from dell.com and $1380 for a T42 from ibm.com. They both had about the same specs 1.6-1.7M, 512 ram, cdrw/dvd drive, wifi.
I still choose the IBM because its the superior machine.

My advice is if you want a 700m buy one in the next couple of weeks from ebay or craigslist. A lot of people jumped on the $750 off $1500 laptop deal on dell last week and u can pick one up at the mentioned websites for slightly more.

I believe ibm has the same machine I purchased last week for $1599 if u use ur Discover card. Not the price I paid but I got lucky on a price error.

Cali,

Keep in mind that the $750 deal seems to be a one time thing, I dont remember anything like that happening in the past.

The $750 off of $1500 deal at Dell.com is a one time thing that is now over. Prices have gone back up to "normal". I read this was because Dell's fiscal year ends in October and they wanted to empty out their extra inventory, which obviously they did within about 24 hours.

As someone mentioned, the 700m is 12" notebook, while the T42 is either going to be 14.1" or 15". So the difference is going to be 2.1" or 3"...

If getting a cheap notebook with big specs on paper a Dull can't be beat. IBMs have many little things done right. It's all about attention to detail.

My point is since so many people got in on the Dell deal, the market will be over saturated with these lappys. A lot of people are only looking to make $50-100 profit on these so u can still reap the benefits even if u missed the original deal.

My point can even be applied to the dead T42 deal.

As I type this with my 14" T42P in my lap, my girlfriend sits beside me with her 700M...apples and oranges indeed. We also have the D600. I have to say that the IBM is without a doubt a better built machine than the Dells. The 700M is "Cute" and my girlfriend thinks it goes well with her Mini. The IBM is sleek and sturdy.

Wouldn't a ThinkPad X40 compare more to the Dell 700M???

And, the X40 is probably the best-built, sturdiest notebook I have ever seen. And, it's not a POS plastic Dell....

man. I was worried there for a second. I'm glad you chose wisely. :D

I have the exact configuration you do, with a bit more ram. It's an awesome computer. You'll love it.
