F11 Blues

#1 Post by South of Sanity » Mon Aug 13, 2007 2:28 am

I cloned the 20GB factory HDD of my R32 to a WD 80GB HDD successfully using Acronis True Image 10. No Problems with that. OS and all apps work fine. Data is in tact.

However, i cannot use the F11 option any longer to format my HDD. I am unable to select this option in the BIOS as well. The servcie partition is in tact and is visible in the Disk Manager.

My question is, by creating a Rescue and Recovery - Recovery repair diskette will i be able to restore this setting? i would like restore the 80GB to factory settings and then customise it to my requirement.

Thanks,
Karan

I'm not sure if this is a common problem when cloning a disk. Neither do i know how the acronis true image cloning works either, but i guess the mbr is different on the 80gb compared to the old 20gb disk so maybe true image cloning does not include the mbr. Could be something else that is required for the F11 to work as well. I don't know in details how the F11 function is working since i do not use R&R or the service partition (i removed the serv. part).

I don't know exactly what the Recovery repair diskette do except to repair the boot sector, but i think some other steps is done as well during the recovery procedure. I never tried the recovery disk so cannot say for sure if and how it's working. If it doesn't solve the problem maybe a reinstallation of R&R is required.

I can't say for certain if your model ThinkPad uses the HPA, but if it does, you probably need to Disable Security for the Predesktop Area before cloning. Also, I do not think all hard drives support the HPA. See the following: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/HPA

Here are a couple of forum threads that should help if you have the HPA. I have not tried cloning a HPA system myself.
