Ah, I do remeber that I had updates both T42s to Bios 3.23 and the Embedded contriler was 3.04 - so that was raising a false hope!

Let's take a step back. What kind of HDD are you using? Also, I think a T42 will or will not have an HPA depending on which recovery disks you are using, not the age of the machine. The reason I ask about the disk brand is that I have had some drives (some toshiba, samsung) that just don't work in T4x. My solution was not to use them.

It's a Fujitsu 40GB HDD, and is the original drive for this T42. The guy who sold me this T42 did a restore using the Recovery disks that came with the machine before he sent it. But although I thought the disks would be included with the T42, he didn't think so. Basically, I thought that the price I paid included them, but I was $1 short! Despite my asking, he refused to send them. We live and learn. So the Recovery disks I'm using I made from a T42 that had a recovery partition, not the HPA.

When you look at the disk with Drive Fitness Test, what is the reported size?

I'm away from home this week, but I do remember the drive size was 40GBs plus a few bytes. This was what the fjerase.exe gave me. AS advised, I stuck it on an Hitachi Fitness Test floppy, so as to run it from A:\.
