T30 system board / grafix gone

#1 Post by dulcit » Tue Oct 26, 2004 5:25 pm

Hi all

I have a T30 (2366-XXD; replaced after my T23 was stolen), but finally the grafix are gone. Bought the machine 2nd hand, about 7 months ago; only realized later it was already a factory refurb. model; the 2nd memory slot only worked when pressure was applied to the mem door, so did not really work;
About 4 weeks ago, after waking from hibernation, the screen started flashing / shifting sideways at a rapid rate; some pressure at the bottom fixed this temporairily; but it came back, got worse, and now the screen is only black - or maybe still gets a strange colour pattern, like being on a trip. (The same happend on the TV out).
Running PC-Doctor - Vido test - told me MOSTLY, not always that the test was not passed (values written in the register weren't read out again correctly); sometimes even WHEN flashing like crazy, it told me video mem was ok.
Anyway: now there is only darkness - and I guess I'll need to replace the system board. Nothing found on ebay (neither here in EU nor US).
I've read through many t30 posts but have not found anything on this (only things re the 2nd mem slot). Any ideas re a board (I can replace it myself).
Thanks all - it is a great forum.

Call IBM customer service- this is a symptom of a known manufaturing defect (short between the motherboard and the HDD in the region of the second memory slot). They even have an "engineering fix" to prevent this happening. You may get a replacement mobo as a goodwill gesture.

Thanks Keith,

I will give it a try - machine's been out of warranty since Jan. 2003; otherwise I'll have to auction the rest of it off, as I'm sure sysboards don't come cheap.
My experiences will be posted.
