My hard drive won't go to sleep

#1 Post by darrenf » Wed Oct 27, 2004 2:22 am

I have a 2378FVU with 60GB 7200RPM HDD and a copy of Windows XP Pro that I clean-loaded. My 9-cell battery would consistently give me 8hours+ battery life, but after a while that fell by 20% or so. I investigated and found that the hard drive is never going to sleep.

I've done a LOT of research to try to identify a process that could be causing this but I've come up with nothing.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any tools available that could show what process is accessing the hard drive on a regular interval and therefore keeping it awake?

Never mind. :)

Just as soon as I made my post I rebooted and found that one of my most recent changes has fixed my problem. I believe it was fixed by uninstalling Norton Ghost. The new version has a special driver setup that allows it to back up system files that are in use. It also may watch the hard drive for changes at a regular interval.

Anyway, it appears to work so I take back the question.
