How do I connect Floppy Drive to USB? (diskette upgrades)

#1 Post by dmcgibbo » Wed Oct 27, 2004 10:45 am

I have a diskette floppy drive (08K9604) that fits in any regular Thinkpad bay but now I have a T42 with the Ultrabay Slim so the floppy drive doesn't fit.

I need to do some diskette upgrades like the DVD multiburner and something else I can't recall but anyway - instead of buying a new drive or trying to figure out how to use a USB flash drive to be bootable and not screw up my Thinkpad doing the upgrade, what's the best way to connect this drive to my computer?

Do they sell a floppy drive to USB cord adapter or something? Will I be able to do diskette updates with a USB floppy drive or does it have to be serial or something? It'd be nice not to have to buy a new drive if I could just get a cord or the part number for an adapter or something.

Also, they don't sell a slim floppy drive do they for my T42p so I'd have to either get an adapter if one exists and ghetto hook it up or buy a USB external floppy drive...
Image T42p (2378-DYU) 1.8GHz | 15"UXGA+ | 512MB | 80GB
128MB ATI FireGL T2 | IBM 802.11a/b/g | BT | WinXP Pro SP2

Any USB floppy drive will work with your system and they're widely available for less than $20.
