T42 -- CPU/warranty -- New LCD question

#1 Post by clickpoint » Sat Aug 18, 2007 2:21 pm

HI

Just received a T42 base base with motherboard
No memory, no cpu, no keyboard or lcd
It was part of a "lot of computer parts"

Product: ThinkPad T42 2374-L1U [change]

Original description: P M 735, 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 15
XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x24x24x/8x
CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI), Bluetooth/Modem
(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, Fingerprint Reader, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

I don't want to spend a lot to see if the motherboard is working or
not... so..

Questions :
1. Can I get away with buying a P M 715 to test it out?
2. Can I test it with a docking station, so I don't have to buy keyboard/bezel
3. It is still under warranty -- but I am entitled to anything if I only
have the base??? Can I get the MB replaced if it is not working?

Type: Model:
2374 L1U

Status: Expiration date: Location:
In warranty 2008-12-14 UNITED STATES

Description:
This product has a three year limited warranty which includes a
ThinkPlus warranty upgrade. This product is entitled to parts and labor and is entitled to on-site service. This machine is also entitled
to the Thinkpad Protection Service. Customers may call the PC
HelpCenter for more information.

THANKS!!!!!!

Your problem with using the warranty will be that IBM would expect faulty parts in exchange for working ones. You could get a new keyboard though, that you don't need to return.

You shouldn't need a dock to test as long as you have a HD, RAM, and CPU. You can connect an external monitor and keyboard/mouse right to the laptop using USB.

I think IBM would want a complete unit (ie with all of it's components) to consider warranty repairs. And all you can reasonably expect them to replace is the MB. (But's that's the most expensive part of the computer).

Unless you have parts to rebuild the unit, this is an expensive way to go :( I hope it works for you but it sounds like a stripper where all of the working components were removed..... except the MB

Could u explain "extra protection?"
Also, I have never used warranty service..... do I just call the 800 number and give them the model and sn?

Also, I just bought a P M 1.5ghz chip from underclocker -- would I be able to use it to test the MB?

Basically, no. The warranty is on a complete ThinkPad, not disassembled parts.

UPDATE --
I guess I was wrong.... finally unpacked everything, and there was the CPU!! The keyboard and bezel were packed separately.

Tossed in memory from my R40, connected to external monitor... IT LIVES!!! :o (but bios locked).... 5 more minutes of playing around  , and now I'm all set to go!!!

I already have cdrw ; so all I need is LCD and wireless card to get it running!

Question : Will this machine support a SXGA LCD?? I have a 15" one at home, but will the 32MB ATI Radeon 7500 support it?

Yes it will, but you need the appropriate inverter and cable for SXGA+ (not "SXGA", which is 1280x1024). Go to this site to find the part numbers you need.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

Hmm... I'll have to check out the LCD when I get home....

Will it work even though it's not IPS??

Also, I have a dead 22p at home... could I use the UXGA screen from it on this machine??

THANKS!

You mean the 15.0" SXGA+ is IPS? It's probably okay but I am not sure. Since you already have an A22p with a UXGA screen, inverter and cable (so that you don't have to buy anything), I recommend you to try that first.

EDIT: I am looking at the HMM for A22p. The cable comes out on the right side of the LCD, so that's the wrong side for your T42, i.e. it won't work.

Will the cable from the 22p actually plug into the MB for the T42??
If so, I could just plug it in while the TP is dissambled to see if it will work.... if LCD works, then I would just need to by a t4x uxga cable and inverter, correct?

Certainly worth a try. I've tested LCDs in that manner.

I believe so, but can't guarantee it.
