In process of ordering T42p 2373-Q1U

#1 Post by Channel K » Thu Oct 28, 2004 4:51 pm

Hey people, just want to say this is a great forum and lots of good advises. Currently, I'm in process of buying this model thru Bill, and wanted to ask you guys couple of questions.
1) If I wanted to make a backup copy(entire disk), what program is the best to use? (I don't have a lot of PC experience, use Mac at home and work)

2) I will have to buy additional HD (probably the same kind as the one that is in the note book, 60GB 7200rpm 2.5in, and buy an external HD enclosure...right? Or what is that ultrabay slim HD adapter? Is that something that use it as a second HD?

Thanks for your advise and suggestions.

There are several options for backing up the hard drive. You can create an image of the drive using norton ghost, I do this and works quite well. Here is the link to the product:

The ultrabay slim HD adapter is just an enclosure where you can insert a 2.5 inch hard drive and plug it into the ultra bay slim drive (or optical drive). This is a very good option since it actually plugs directly into your secondary IDE in the motherboard. It's also nice because there are not extra cable or anything and it is very small. Here is the link to it:

Hope this helps,

I would recommend some external drive over the ultrabay hd adapter - it would be easier to hook it up to a different computer if the need ever presents itself.

btw - I'm thinking about ordering the Q1U model also, when do you expect delivery? or is it still up in the air?

Channel K,

You will love your machine and Bill's service.

I am Ghosting my T42p right now using an external USB hard drive. It's slow but OK until my 2nd HDD adapter arrives. Once it does I plan to use it with my bootable USB key and Norton Ghost to back up the drive. Have been using Ghost for years. Love it. Other products are said to be better (Acronis DriveImage). I don't care, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Good luck with your new Thinkpad!

Thanks guys, it really helps me alot! :D
I guess I'll buy that extra bay as a main backup and buy additional external HD case and bigger 2.5 as a secondary measure.
what is the biggest size out there for 2.5"? 100GB?

Can't believe it doesn't have a firewire port...oh well..USB 2 have to do...

Thank again!

Yes, 100GB is the largest of the 2.5" drives although the only one I can find runs at a measly 4200 RPM. I would suggest going with an 80GB 5400 RPM one instead as 4200 RPM drives are just terribly slow, even if you are just backing up to them. They are really rather pitiful and I would avoid one unless you are just going to use it like once a month for a backup.

I suggest getting a drive just like the one in the laptop, and an external 2.5" enclosure... The 7200RPM should make a lot of different when writing big files like backups, I would assume...

http://seagate.com/cda/products/discsal ... 35,00.html

Up there in Seagate webpage lists 5400rpm 100GB for notebook.
This one looks okay...what do you guys think? But I can't find a place
to buy one.. :?

Thus the reason I didn't suggest it. Because it hasn't hit the supply chain yet for anyone other than large OEMs. If it were available I not only would have suggested it, I would probably be the owner of one right now. :D

ZipZoomFly supposedly has it at a price of $257, but they are backordered/out of stock. I wouldn't guess they would have one in for about two weeks. Link
