any ideas?.....suggestions?
I read your other thread, and I'm just wondering how hard it is for you to go back to Best Buy or CompUSA or any store that carries 15" LCDs, and see for yourself what 1024x768 looks like on a 15" LCD. The technology is essentially the same (although you will get better backlighting and contrast on a stand-alone LCD v. built-in T42 15" VGA screen). You'll be able to then make the 'subjective' evaluation that seems to be driving you crazy.
And if you don't mind scaling down to 1024x768 on a 14" SXGA+ (1400x1050), it'll look even better on a 15" 1600x1200. I'm looking at two T42p (both 14" SXGA+ and 15" UXGA) right now, and I've scaled them down to VGA, and the 15" looks better. Not to mention, when you buy a 15" T42/T42p with 1400x1050 or 1600x1200 resolution, you'll get the Flexview screen as well (the 15" VGA on ThinkPads is a standard LCD), which has better brightness and contrast, as well as more accurate color rendering IMO.
The bottom line is that no matter what, whether people offer up their opinions, pics of the screen, or the technical data (dpi, nits, power, etc), none of that is going to answer your question. Only YOUR eyes on a screen IN FRONT OF YOU can do that.
Daniel.

Tek,
I really wish I could help you but my guess is nothing anyone here on the board says is truly going to matter. No disrespect intended to you or anyone else. I know what you are going through, I had the same dilemma and decided on a 15" 1600x1200 T42p, and, to *ME*, it's perfect, I love it. It *is* a little smaller than I'd like (my T30 was 14" 1024x768) but the sharpness of the Flexview display is truly mind-blowing. I have both Thinkpads sitting here next to each other and there is simply no comparison. Now, granted, the 1024x768 screen on the T30 is two years old but still...
As someone who uses 1600x1200 on the desktop, and up until now, 1024x768 on my Thinkpad, I can tell you that the web looks "better" at 1024x768. At 1600x1200, many sites look plain stupid (lots of empty space). In fact, if the site is designed for 800x600 (as most are), you will have HALF THE SCREEN EMPTY while you browse. Kinda annoying if you ask me.
Anyway, you must *EITHER* see these two screens in person *OR* make your best guess and be done with it. Like many have said, you can always return it if you don't like it. Yes it's a hassle but that's life, you know?
If you want to be happy you've gotta get the right one for you, don't settle.
Personally just reading your posts makes me predict you'd be thrilled with a 1024x768 (XGA) T42, but only you can decide. Good luck!
