T43 Will Not Load Bios Update

#1 Post by hoosierdaddy » Fri Aug 31, 2007 8:07 am

Hey, Everyone! I am new to the community. Thanks in advance for your help. I'm trying to update the Bios 1.29 & Embedded Controller 1.06 (my current version, 1.28 with Embedded Controller Version, 1.05) from the web site. It won;t update from the Windows XP Pro using Run, or from CD disk internal or USB. Followed both types of install instructions carefully. Kind of frustrating. Don't have a floppy drive. Seems Kind of weird that we have to go buy a floppy drive to update the bios. Does anyone Have any suggestions. Thanks for your help.

No, you don't need a floppy disc. In fact, for the T43, I think the only version available is the non-diskette one. Just download the BIOS update file onto your desktop area and double click its icon. Follow the instructions, the machine will restart, then follow more instructions, the BIOS will be updated and when that's done the machine will turn itself off. Restart the machine, let Windows load, and repeat the process for the Embedded Controller.

What is the model number of your T43? It should be something like 1871-51U or 2668-98U (some examples).

welcome to the forum.

bios version 1.29 for machine types 2668-9, 2678-9 and 2686-7 requires you to update the embedded controller to version 1.06 before you can run the bios update.
Notes:
- This version of the BIOS will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.06 (or higher).

There is no denying that as it's stated in the same paragraph as that which I quoted above, seems a little contradictory to me :?
Whenever I have done bios updates for myself, or for customers, I have always ensured that the correct version of "x" is installed before installing an update of "y" and have never had a problem.
That means if an ecc update requires a particular bios version, I have installed the bios version first and then the ecc, following on with the next necessary bios and so on until the TP is up to date.

The instructions are confusing. See below:

From: BIOS Version: 1RETDRWW (3.23)
<snip>
- This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program
Version 3.04 (or higher). Please obtain the additional package,
Embedded Controller Program Version 3.04 (or higher), and update
Embedded Controller Program in the system with it.
- If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the
BIOS, update the BIOS first.
-------------------------------

From: Embedded Controller Program : 3.04 (1RHT71WW)
<snip>
- If you need to update the BIOS as well as the Embedded Controller
Program, update Embedded Controller Program first.
=======================

In practice, if I have to do both, I use the diskette versions exclusively and a floppy drive, I do the Controller first, restart (which it does anyway), and do the BIOS second immediately from the restart. Seems to work.

Hey, thanks everyone for your replies and for your warm welcomes.

I have tried to install both ways--1.29 bios first, and 1.06 EC first. I have downloaded and tried starting from the desktop and also downloaded the floppy version (I don't have a floppy drive, though) and burned to CD. No luck. Even when I try to install the web bios file from my desktop, I get this message: "Diskette in the default drive will not run on this system."

My Model number is: 1875DMUL3AM033
System Board: VS0PL5B81LW

Thank you!

Based on your model number, you should be using the following BIOS update and Embedded Controller update. Make sure you were using the correct update for your T43.

BIOS Update (Non-Diskette) - ThinkPad R52 (1858, 1859, 1860, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1958), T43 (1871, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1876)

Embedded Controller Program (Non-Diskette) - ThinkPad R52 (1858, 1859, 1860, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1958), T43 (1871, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1876)

Assuming you were using the correct updates, you are not the only one to have trouble using the Windows version of the BIOS update and Embedded Controller update. The Window version of the BIOS update would not work for me either on my T42. The diskette version is the one to use, as jdhurst mentioned. I bought an IBM external USB floppy drive for just such occasions. There have been users that have been able to make a bootable CD from the diskette version, but I have not tried this. See the following thread: Bios problems, T43.

Hooray!! Thank you! It worked. I did not realize that I had the wrong file for my computer. Evidently, I searched for t43 bios update thinking they were all the same. Not so. And, of course, I was trying to install the wrong one.

I already have the current Embedded Controller version. So, I did not have to install that.

Bill, and everyone else, thank you for your help. You are great!!

Sincerely,

Ken
