Dell FPM screen blinks constantly when connect to dock

I have a Thinkpad T40 laptop connected to a thinkpad docking station. Recently the external monitor screen is constantly blinking in and out when connected to the docking station. The connection is analog. But when I connect the external monitor to the thinkpad without the docking station everything is fine.
Any ideas how to fix this problem?

It sounds to me like the pass-thru port in the docking station is bad. If that is true, the solution is to replace the docking station
