I'm pretty sure it monitors the type of phone line you plug your Thinkpad into.

Most phone lines are analog. However, if you plug into a digital line, as is common at most businesses and some hotels, you will FRY an analog modem (which we have). DLD protects you.

If you never use your modem, or only use it in a home environment, you can safely remove it. If you do use your modem or might, leave it there, you'll be glad you did.

When I worked in the private sector as a ERP project manager/consultant we constantly had people blowing up modems by plugging into digital jacks.

Hope this helps,

As a followup to this old thread, does DLG.EXE (Digital Line Detect) do anything to actually protect that hardware, or does it just pop up a nice little notice saying something like "Sorry old chum, that's a digital line. Go find an analog line."

If the utility actually protects the computer somehow, I'm all for leaving it running, despite using up 3 MB. I only use the modem when I travel, and then generally only if WiFi isn't available. If it's just a notification utility, I'd rather yank it.

Thanks Leon. That makes one more application plucked from my startups, one less process running in the background, another 2.7 MB RAM freed up!
