need some help upgrading T41

#1 Post by silo » Sat Sep 01, 2007 7:12 pm

I got a nice T41 on eBay but it only has wireless B, and I need G for speed, so I need some help--could someone tell me the precise product I need to replace the built-in wireless on this model?

Machine also has a 40G Fujitsu 5400 RPM drive (32G available and a restore partition), and I'm wondering if there's an inexpensive upgrade for that.

It is model number 2373R03 -- ot one of the fancier ones.

Also, and finally, something is whining, sounds like the drive, a constant hum with a slight periodic pulse to it. Is that characteristic of the Fujitsu drive?

MOD EDIT: Moved from X series forum to T4x series. Poster notified.

It is hard to know what you mean by inexpensive. You could get a 5400 RPM 60 GB drive or a 160 GB 7200 RPM drive. Are you trying to improve speed? More space? Both? As far as wireless, you can actually use any wireless G card if you apply the no-1802 patch. Search this forum or thinkwiki for details.

Even if you can use the no-1802 patch i would suggest getting a wireless mini-pci adapter where you don't need the patch. It's not that expensive and less hassel. I would also recommend the IBM/Atheros and not the Intel mini-pci adapters.

Most likely the fan... Mine used to do that before I changed it out.

sure it can, i'm using one in my T42 now :) Just make sure you get the PATA (ATA) version instead of the SATA and you'll be all good to go
