Help!!! T41p wont start

#1 Post by TOMSrolla » Sun Sep 02, 2007 8:30 pm

I open my T41p this morning at the office and and on boot up it shows "FAN ERROR" then it shuts down. tried to reboot and it shows the same message and shuts down again..... got the unit last April and have not yet open the unit to clean the fans .

I have used the unit for 10hrs as I was downloading big PDF files files from our principals website last night. and put it in standby mode when i was finished downloading.

well the fan probably is either clogged or just died. It's a easy replacement but if you have warranty time to call them up. get a air can and try to blow out the dust if there's any and try botting the system again. Just remove the keyboard (few screws) and clean her up.

Thanks for the quik reply.....

the unit IBM warranty ended last March 2007, the cost of IBM parts being offered by IBM Philippines is so prohibitive . I have to source it out from EBay if the fan needs replacement .. will try to open the unit and clean the fan for dust . is there a step by step guide in cleaning the fan or any precautionary steps to lookout for ?

The cost of a replacement long fan isn't terrible, as one can be obtained for under $20 on eBay (though shipping would be a different story). There isn't really a step-by-step procedure for cleaning the fan; just lift up the keyboard (use the Hardware Maintenance Manual if you need help) and spray away with some compressed air.

Fan Error

#5 Post by RRHODY » Mon Sep 03, 2007 6:50 am

Could there be another possibility working here? Seems to me the CMOS battery "controls" whether or not the fan works. I guess if there's not enough "juice" (sorry for the technical terminology) in the CMOS battery, the fan won't work. Not sure if this would generate the error message, but the CMOS battery is relatively inexpensive and may be worth a try also.

had the unit opened today and used compressed air to blow away the dust... still , it wont start and then i totally tookout the fan and heatsink and have it powered all by itself and the fan wont start still..... i should look for a replacement fan at EBAY.

is there a difference between a long fan and an M10 long fan ? According to IBM HMM parts list my unit model has the M10 long fan PN# 13R2657 and the one I have in my unit is a long fan PN # 13N5339 ?
