I installed Windows from the scratch by my self and it works fine for me. Read here for similar experience
I did the same, and did not have a good experience attempting to run a T43 with the incorrect HAL.
The first symptom I found was that the operating time on batteries was considerably shorter. At the time, I was frequently traveling the same Seattle – Newark plane flight, and attempting to do some productive work during the flight. Running normal office programs (Outlook, Word, and Excel), my battery would last about 4 hours. After the incorrect install, it ran less than 2 hours. Then a clean install from the hidden partition and I was back to 4 hours – all with the same battery.. I had the <2 hour experience three times, so I ruled out forgetting to charge it once. I have on good word from someone who worked on the design team that some of the power saving features in the machine require the “ACPI Uniprocessor PC” HAL to operate properly. Running with another HAL causes these features to run at full power at all times, resulting in shorter battery operating time.
The second problem – which clued me in on the problem – Attempting to install the Lenovo TPM driver results in instant blue screen and hard crash. Other forum members have experienced the same – search for TPM and HAL in the T4x forum.
Prior to attempting to install the Lenovo TPM driver, the machine would occasional blue screen at random times, about twice a week. All of these problems went away when I did the correct install using the hidden partition.
I read that it is possible to force generic windows to install the correct HAL by aborting the AUTORUN routine on the CD, typing a DOS like command line with certain switches set. I don’t know the command syntax, and it was not in this forum. It may be in the Microsoft knowledge base, but it may take quite a while to find it.
It is also either extremely difficult or more likely impossible to change the HAL once windows installs.
You can check the HAL after installation by right clicking MyComputer, then Properties/Hardware/Device Manager/ then expand the Computer entry. If the correct HAL is installed, you will see “ACPI Uniprocessor PC”. If it reads anything else, you are running with the wrong HAL.
