Where's the R&R image.
Where's the R&R image.
Just installed R&R 2.0 and ran a backup. Where's the recovery image (file)? Also noticed that some of the screens are truncated, such as the one with the pie chart. I'm also assuming this is an image similar to Acronis or Ghost, yes? Finally, has anyone done a restore and does it work? Last, I'm thinking of installing Norton Goback, much quicker, I think, if you want to roll back after a software tinkering or install you don't like. Anyone using that on a T41 with R&R also installed.
Thanks.
Thanks.

No. Since Rapid Restore 4 (=Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore 1.0), the backup files are not stored in a hidden partition, but in a hidden folder (named "RRUbackups") on a partition you can freely specify. This folder, however, is a secure place which cannot be accessed easily by the user or other software. Defrag programs, for instance, cannot do their job on the files which are stored there. If you specify a network location, however, the files stored there are freely accessible.ychandrani wrote:R&R image is in a hidden partition,
For R&R 1.0, there's a special tool with which individual backup sets in the secure folder can be deleted:

Many thanks go to s0larian for this info:

R&R 2.0 already features a much more user friendly way to delete backups, this functionality has now been integrated into the graphical user interface.

Thanks, both of you. I'd bought Acronis, but could not get it to work on a W98 333 so I got a refund. From work I have Ghost 2003 as well, but have not tried it. I've also looked at Paragon Drive Backup 6.0. It's been difficult to devise a backup scheme for both computers and the two other computers on my home LAN. Although the choices in R& 2.0 are limited, it seems to do the job -- a clean image of the entire system -- so I'm going to use it until I figure things out. Meanwhile, I'm also going to install Norton GoBack on my T41-- much more flexible than R&R. Quicker I think. Comments?
Personally I never liked the old service partition mechanism and deleted it on my T30. I now use R&R V2 and am happy with that. I use it to backup my system partition only (I don't use incrementals just one backup copy of my last known "good" system drive).
All my user data (documents, spreadsheets, EMail folders, basically anything that's not part of the system) is on another partition and is backed up to either CD or Zip.

ASHLEYS: If by service partition you mean the partition that holds the software that returns your machine to an out-of-the-box state, I too have been thinking of reclaiming that space. I ordered IBM restore disks the day I picked up the machine, so I have all that material on four CD's. Seems like overkill to have in on the HD. I'm also moving from a 5 GB HD to a 40 GB (from the Gateway 333 to the T41) and have never partitioned. But I see the value of such a scheme. When you say SYSTEM partition, what do you have there, just WIN? Do you have your WIN apps on a second partition and your data on a third?
Norman,
I've got a T30 with a 40GB HDD partitioned as follows,
C: 10GB - Contains Windows and all installed applications
D: 20GB - All data files (Documents, Spreadsheets, Outlook folders etc.)
R: 7.5GB - Where my RRUBackups folder is (I also use this as a temporary dumping ground if I ever need to re-size partitions).
I use R&R to backup C: only which protects me against total Windows failure. If Windows is so broken I cannot boot then I can boot from my rescue media CD (to start R&R) and then restore my complete C: image from R: All my user data is untouched and available immediately.
In the event of a HD failure then after the new drive was installed I'd restore from my recovery CD's and service windows manually.
My data files held on D: are backedup to both CD and Zip.
Ashley.

Interesting, I manage my data and backups almost exactly the same way.ashleys wrote:Norman,

I discovered some incompatibilities between my version of GoBack 4.0 and R&R 2.0 (but I have to admit that I still haven't updated GoBack with the Symantec LiveUpdate feature, so that problem might be solved already). On my machines, when GoBack 4.0 is activated, the R&R 2.0 emergency environment will only boot up to a blue screen. I would always have to turn off GoBack 4.0 if I wanted to start R&R, but I'm not sure whether GoBack will really shut off cleanly in the case of a severe failure and let R&R allow to run like it should. I haven't tried booting R&R 2.0 from the emergency CD when GoBack is running, however, so this might work.normanm wrote:Meanwhile, I'm also going to install Norton GoBack on my T41-- much more flexible than R&R. Thanks one and all. The partitioning schemes make sense. I think I'll follow them. But this raises some other questions.
1. Thinking about all of this, I noticed a post here (wish I could locate the original and follows) that offered a way to reformat and create a bootable XP disk, a clean install and reformat the drive, this presumably to get rid of the hidden partition that had the original config on it to restore --
http://www.4saad.com/WhatsNew/Fresh_XP_ ... /index.htm
Is this necessary. A) Isn't there a simple way to delete all the backup software on the HD that I already have on the 4 recovery disks IBm sent?
B) After that can't you simply use Partition Magic to reset or create the partitions suggested? Or is it better indeed to follow Saad's procedure, then reinstall the software you want.
2. My T41 came with a lot of processes already running in startup. Most I notice are started with registry entries. Which processes/programs have people disable -- i.e., I'd like to get rid of IBM Messeges. Can't see any point to it.
