How Do I Email In Hebrew Letters with XP?

#1 Post by Plinkerton » Sat Oct 30, 2004 11:15 pm

I need to write an email in Hebrew to someone in Israel. I will be using IE. If you right click in an IE window, you get a thing called "Encoding" with a selection table of many languages. When I select one however, nothing happens. On my previous computer, I had a little icon in the taskbar thingie, that I could switch between Hebrew and English, just by selecting the language. The problem is that someone did this for me, and I am not sure how they did it. I don't need to have the taskbar thing back, but what is the deal with the encoding thing, if it doesn't seem to change anything? I just need to find a way to switch between English and Hebrew somewhat easily.

Oh, the email is web-based yahoo email. And I'm running Windows XP with SP2.

Does anyone have any ideas? This is extremely important, and I would be very grateful. :D

Thank you very much,
Plink

I think you can go to control panel -> regional and language options -> languages -> details -> add language/keyboard.

Sugo, thank you so much, you're a prince. But, one problem. This works fine on my ThinkPad, which is awesome, but I also need to tell my mom how to do this on her computer, and I have run into a problem.

On her computer, which is a brand new Dell, with windows XP2, when I talk her through this same thing, for some reason, she doesn't have Hebrew. It's the one language she also needs, and it's just not there. She hasn't done anything to her computer, and I haven't done anything to mine, yet I have Hebrew, and she doesn't.

Hers goes from Greek to Hungarian, and it's missing Gujerati, Hindi, and Hebrew. It's very strange.

Thank you so much for your help, as this is exactly what I needed to do. Now though, if you could help with this next problem, it would be awesome!!!

Thank you again,
Plink

Those keyboards are technically called Input Method Editors (IMEs). This page at Microsoft should help get you started on finding one for Hebrew to install for your Mom.

Hope this helps.

Hey Plink,
Hebrew is one of the languages that does not come 'pre-installed' with XP. Have your mom do what you did. If it installs then all is good, if not you'll need the XP CD to install the files (I believe). I think that it's all the right to left languages, not just hebrew.

Hmmm... That seems like it would help, except that they are only offering a few Asian languages in that link. I can't find a big list of anything else.

Do you know?

Thanks again,

In control panel -> regional and language options -> languages

check the box "Install files for complex .... "

after that hopefully you will be able to select it.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. My mom is ecstatic and yelling into the phone. For some reason, on hers, Hebrew wasn't there, but it was on mine. I couldn't tell her what to do, as I couldn't see what was on her screen. For me it was simple, but for them, they had that extra step.

Thank you so much. The guy who works on their computer sometimes, had already done this for them before, and wanted to charge a minimum of 40 bucks, to come over for 2 minutes, and do this again. I thought that was ridiculous.

Thank you so much, you've made her quite happy.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! :D :D :D

Haha, I'm doing well thanks, but I actually don't speak Hebrew. All this trouble was mainly for my mom, but I wanted to have it on my computer also, for when she wants to use it. I just didn't want to get into the whole story of my mom needs it, blah blah, so I tried to make it simple. And no, I don't use IE and I never will... I don't want you guys thinking that I do... :P

My mom is from Israel, and teaches Hebrew at the University I attend. She has daughters in Israel, that she writes emails too, but with this new computer, that she hates, because it's new and different, and she hates computers, the Hebrew wasn't there. I told her she'll learn to appreciate the difference between a 3.2 GHz P4 over the 500Mghz piece of crap they had before. She doesn't buy it... She thinks computers are the devil.

I can read Hebrew and all that, but I don't understand it past some very basic words.

Thanks again so much. You've helped her out tons.

I sent a similar observation about messages being posted in the wrong forum to one of the moderators last night. Perhaps we'll soon see an increase of threads being moved to their proper place. Locking duplicate threads would also be a nice touch, but I guess I can't have everything...

Plinkerton, just as a side note, Windows XP Professional has a great feature that's called "Remote Desktop". It allows you to work on an XP Pro machine from another computer that can be located anywhere on earth, as long as both computers can be connected with each other by internet or phone. This way, you could work on your mom's computer (provided she has the professional version of XP installed on it) as if it was standing right in front of you.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/usin ... fault.mspx

This feature does not depend on very high bandwidth for good results, but, as I said, the host computer must be running XP Professional. If your mom doesn't have that, you could still try one of those free VNC (= Virtual Network Computing) packages, for instance UltraVNC:

I had seen that in my start menu, and was wondering if that's what that was. Unfortunately, which seems like it would have been worth it now, she didn't want to spring for Professional, as she didn't really care about the differences.

As to why I posted this in the T42 section, I have a T42, and was curious how I did this Hebrew thing on my computer. I guess it's a pretty general XP question, but I just figured that since it's about doing this on a T42, I'd ask here.

I'll try to post it in a more specific place next time.

Actually, an XP Home machine can be remotely connected to from an XP Pro machine. But XP Home cannot connect to someone else. On XP Home they call it "Remote Assistance" The reason MS put in the RDP is so that people could get tech support help over the internet. Thus the reason Home supports being connected to. Find out more about this over here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/commun ... w1002.mspx

Oh yeah, and about posting here Plink, I am glad you did as there is no way in hell I would normally look at the Windows forums. Feel free to PM me if there is something you want me to look at ever.

Thanks lfeagan. Just between me and you, that was part of the reason I posted here. Everyone here is so helpful and quick to respond, and it's the only section of the TP forums that I frequent. :D

I figured that since I am using a T## thinkpad, I could stretch it, and post it here. :p

Thanks again everyone. That remote assistant looks awesome. I've been intrigued by that stuff since high school, when I saw a networked computer being worked on. No one was sitting at the computer, and the mouse was moving all around. it was cool. :D

I'll have to teach my parents how to do that.

Thanks.

EDIT: One other question. I will be using Windows Messenger to connect with them, and I noticed that there is no way to get the Messenger icon out of the quick launch thingie. I can close it, and sign off, but it always stays there. When I try to close it, it says:

"There are other applications currently using features proveded by windows messenger. You must close these other apps. before you can exit windows messenger. These apps. may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, and Internet Explorer. "

As far as I know, I never use any of those. What could it be? I want to get this stupid icon out of here, as I will rarely use this program.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove it from there. It is a Windows Component, and is not in the user-added program listing.

Well, I want to keep it, as I will ocassionally use it. i was just curious if there was a way to get it out of the little quickstart menu thing, when I want to close it. When I right click the icon, and go to close, it gives that error I mentioned above.
