Wireless problem

#1 Post by johnfox » Thu Sep 06, 2007 9:00 am

Hi, I'm trying to help out a friend with a T43 and the Atheros 11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter II. It has not worked well for him from day 1, and his solution was to purchase an external USB wireless adapter.

The Atheros adapter will connect at 11 Mbps with older 802.11 b access points without a hitch using Access Connections or Windows zero config.

I have not been able to get it to connect at all to any 802.11 g access points no matter what settings I try.

I have the latest driver (5.3.0.35) installed for the adapter, and AC 4.42 installed. I see no Winsock2 corruption.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

very weird, so when you set the network to 802.11G only does the network still show up on the SSID list or does it not?

ok well that's definitely weird, Now you've tried this without encryption i'm guessing? If not try unsecured for a lil while and then see if it connects then.

IF you've already tried that, recreate the wireless network on the router. Just reset it and then setup all the settings again (make a backup first of your current settings if you have lots in there)

I am not using any encryption. It will work with an older apple airport with wep on.

I have reset the router, updated it's firmware and reset to factory settings. I don't believe the Belkin router is at fault. It won't connect with any of the networks available in hot spots.

Ok so when you see the network, click connect and all that what does it do?

Does it just say "Aquiring IP Address" then doesn't get one or what?

Did you actually check the advanced settings in device manager for that wireless network adapter? You have some options there to change the transmit rate for 11g, set the preamble and some other settings. If they are changed you could change it back to default and see if that make any difference.

In windows wireless it never gets past "waiting for connection", in access connections it never gets past "waiting for association".

I have tried changing the advanced settings for the device and using the defaults.

Give the following a try and see what it reports.

The network diagnostic tool says it can't renew an IP and that I should contact the router manufacturer...

I didn't think it could connect to any 802.11 g access points, but I had it connected to an airport extreme at 54 mps so now I'm even more baffled.

IBM wireless support claimed the "older bartlett card" needed further configuration to make it do 802.11 g and passed me on to expert (pay) support because it's a software problem. It's still under warrenty!

From all I've read on this forum it should be working, so I'm not going to waste any more time on it.

Thank you for all your suggestions.
