T40 on the way, has issues

#1 Post by dwilsonfl » Sat Sep 08, 2007 3:05 pm

Just bought a t40 off ebay pretty cheap. Owner is keeping the HD, no biggie, I got spares. But it has issues I'll have to deal with:

"This laptop does not always start. It will start and run for about 5-10 minutes and then lock up. It appears to be a fan or memory issue."

I'll be putting a new HD in, and I'm getting the restore disks. It has 1GB of RAM in it now, and I have a 1GB stick in my Toshiba (leaving soon I hope).

What would you do when it arrived assuming the symptoms continued after the new HD and RAM?

Thanks for any help. I'm SO glad to be back with a TP

It sounds exactly like my T41 described in this thread. After receiving this T40, see if it runs longer when kept cool by a nearby air conditioner.

Will try that. Wondered about pulling the CPU and redoing the "grease" with Arctic Silver if it turns out I have to crack the case. Hadn't thought about the long fan vs short fan.

It's a 2372-19U, 1 GB Ram P M 1.3GHz, NO HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD(slim), Modem(CDC), Ethernet(LOM), Intel 802.11b Wireless(MPCI), Secure Chip(TCPA), UltraNav, 6 cell battery

Got a dock and two adapters, plus the restore disks for a little over $200. If I can get it working well I'll be ecstatic.

Have spent the weekend reading all the posts on T4- issues and possible fixes. Hope I can make it through to a functional machine. My old T22 was such a sturdy warrior I'm surprised at the problems in the 40 series.

I've got the time and won't sell the Toshiba I'm using now until I get the T40 stable.

downloaded NHC on it - neat program.
