battery calibration.. is it work?

#1 Post by drnoom » Sun Sep 09, 2007 11:59 am

i have performed battery calibration and it kill my battery.

is it good to do?

here is my result.

before: wear level = 10%
after : wear level = 15%

so it did not help but also damage my battery.

Any comments are welcome.

Best regards

I don't think the battery calibration has damaged your battery. But I would put it through three complete charge/recharge cycles to condition it.

When you do only partial discharges of the battery, the battery condition indication becomes somewhat of a "dead reckoning" (to use a navigational term) calculation based on usage from the previous calibration point. If you haven't done a battery calibration previously, the calibration point would have been when the battery was initialy installed.

To get a "known calibrated" battery state, you need to perioidcally etsbalish a definitively known battery condition.

The battery calibration process is to explicitly determine exactly what state your battery is actually in, by taking it to a known fully discharged state and then charging it, until it will no longer accept any further charge, to establish a current and known fully charged state.

From those two known states and discharge/charge times the power manager then has a definitive battery state to use as a new calibration point. The process doesn't (and can't) do anything different to the battery than what can occur in normal usage.

So, your battery had already reached a 15% wear level state and all the battery conditioning process has done is update the previous "dead reckoning" calculation of a 10% wear level to the current "known calibrated" state for the battery.

Cheers,

Bill B.

on the same topic, where to I find calibration option on T42

#5 Post by buglawton » Mon Sep 10, 2007 6:10 am

As new proud owner of a refurb T42 I have just joined the Forum and this is my first post here:

Have seen a menu that shows how to reset the battery on the Lenovo site, I assume this discharges it fully then recharges and re-calibrates the meter (my old Compaq had a simple option to do this).

My Battery wizard does not show such an option and Control Panel > Power Options > Power Meter, if I click Battery Charging icon, it does not offer a reset or recycle option.

Is this option not standard on T42 or is it downloadable?

It is standard on the factory preload. You need the Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management Features software. After installing it, run the Battery MaxiMiser Wizard to set it up. You can find it here: Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Battery MaxiMiser Wizard.

You can get pretty much all the available drivers and software for your T42 from the following link:
Drivers and software - ThinkPad T42, T42p

Note that generally speaking, you need to download the executable file from Lenovo, run the executable to extract the files to your hard drive, then run Setup.exe from the directory the files were extracted to, to install the program. All the files are extracted to subdirectories of C:\Drivers\. It is best to read through the readme file for each driver or software to verify installation instructions and any dependencies (on other software).

I would guess that your battery's actual capacity has only 85% left comparing to the new one. The data stored in EEPROM of the battery didn't get to update until you did the calibration. As the result you get 15% wear level (which is the actual reading) after a full discharge/charge cycle.
