How Best to Test for Dead Pixels?

#1 Post by Peter_S » Sun Oct 31, 2004 2:58 pm

Since I just purchased an IBM ThinkPad notebook, I will be checking for dead pixels once the notebook arrives.

I'd be curious as to how people here to test for dead pixels. Is there a preferred benchmarking type software, such as SiSoft Sandra, that people use to test out the LCD panel? If a certain type of software is used, I'd be interested in knowing specifically which one and why.

My initial guess as to how to test the LCD screen is to display a full screen of black, then red, then green, then blue, etc.

Again, I'd be most interested to read how other ThinkPad forum users test for dead pixels.

p.s. Particularly interested to read how Bill Morrow "cherry picks" ThinkPads with no dead pixels for his customers!

Well the way you mentioned it is how I would test it myself... First and foremost I'd check a black and a white screen, then other colors.. I'd also test a screen full of text to make sure everything is nice and crisp..

Follow-up Question regarding Dead Pixels

#4 Post by Peter_S » Sun Oct 31, 2004 4:48 pm

redsb3, thanks much for referring me to the web site for testing LCD screens!

I have a follow-up question for none, though. none, how do you suggest calling up a black screen, then a white screen, then a red screen, etc. on an IBM ThinkPad? What's the easiest way to do that on a ThinkPad?

Again, I appreciate people's assistance on this item!

There's a nice little tool on the IBM pre-install, the PC Doctor. It provides a test for exactly that, shows all the different colored screens. I don't use it often for other things, though.

Why would you want to check for dead/stuck pixels with some software? If you can't see them by using your computer normally, why would you care? All my four T42's came with dead/stuck pixels and dust (in one of them) that I could see right away without any software.
