Hi,
I'm trying to figure it out for a couple of weeks now.
So... here's the deal. I had T40 (ati radeon 7500 32MB), I have t40p (ati radeon firegl 9000 64MB).
On t40p the sxga+ matrix have some kind of waving (interferences) on games. After about 5-10 minutes playing waving stops, but it shouldn't be like that.
When I quit the game waving are slowly (5s) disappearing in windows gui.
Then everything is fine.
When I had t40 I swap the matrixs (xga <-> sxga+) and sxga+ on t40 had the same waving.
On t40p xga had a clear picture, even on 3D, no problems.
So I thought it must be the sxga+ matrix!
Seller of the t40p had a spare sxga+ matrix from t41p. He sended it.
Today (unfortunately I don't have t40 and his great working xga anymore) I received t41p matrix.
I swap those and... it's the same problem! Ach those wavings.
By matrix I meant the whole lcd assembly (cable, inverter, matrix and casing).
Photos (I didn't use ati's overclock capabilities, only for animation): :

Really, I don't know what to think. What are the chances of two the same corrupted matrixs
(years and models are difference)?

Try running the machine via an external monitor if possible.
If you still encounter the graphic artifacts then I would start looking at hardware fault. It could be as simple as reseating RAM cards and such. Or your GPU could be coming loose from the motherboard. If this happens it's only a matter of time before the system dies a horrible death solvable only by replacing the motherboard or reflowing the BGA solder with a heat gun.
What is interesting is that it stops this behavior after a few minutes. This leads me to question the cooling fan. Is it running when this is happening?
You can download the PC Doctor software from IBM/Lenovo. Create a bootable CD and run it. It will test all parts of the system and let you know if anything is out of order.
Report back here with your findings and either myself or another forum member will do our best to assist you with further troubleshooting if required.
God speed and good luck.

Hmm that's not very good...Temetka wrote:If you still encounter the graphic artifacts then I would start looking at hardware fault.
I didn't think about that. When I play the GPU is at 59oC. tpfancontrol is at it's max. performance and it's the same problem. But what's interesting when I apply some of the powerplay ('balance' in notebook hardware control, 53oC, decrease fps) picture is clean. Maybe that's the issue?Temetka wrote:This leads me to question the cooling fan. Is it running when this is happening?
[Edit]: Ok, so it happends when temp. go over 58oC. When I underclocked GPU from 252/200 to 200/198 wavings appeared later (at 62oC). 140/200, 68oC and 3D is clean. 59oC is too much for the ati's gpu in standard MHz? I looked inside and cooler is fine. What can I do?
Downloaded... . I'll do the whole test in a couple of hours.Temetka wrote:You can download the PC Doctor software from IBM/Lenovo. Create a bootable CD and run it. It will test all parts of the system and let you know if anything is out of order.
