T42 Dothan Upgrade
T42 Dothan Upgrade
I have a T42 2379 DXU. I upgraded to 1 gig of RAM and run XP professional.
I have only joined the forum recently but have enjoyed reading the posts and the advice given by the members. I appreciate the help that I have been given thus far.
Soon I will be replacing the fan and heat sink modeule on my T42. After reading several posts and articles on this forum concerning notiecable increase in performance by ugrading the processor to a Dothan, I am considering it.
Can someone let me know which Dothan's are compatible with my T42.

your T42 already has a Dothan unless it was replaced. The T42s came with Dothans while the T40 and T41s had Banias CPUs.

Yes, it has a 735 Dothan (1.7GHz). Increased performance would be modest from a 2.0 or 2.1 GHz. Why are you changing the HS and fan on your T42?
A 7200RPM HDD is probably the best bang-for-the-buck upgrade, performance wise.

To the OP, welcome to the forum.
I also have a 2379-DXU, which apparently is a very popular model and for good reason, it came with great features.
Upgrading to a Dothan 1.8, 2.0 or 2.1 are the options. Only the 2.0 or 2.1 make sense due to the marginal increase from a Dothan 1.7 to a 1.8. The 2.0's and 2.1's are still expensive, $150 and up.
If you want one, eBay is a good source or you could post an LF (looking for) ad in the marketplace on this forum.
Upgrading is easy, especially since you're replacing the fan. Don't forget the thermal grease (hopefully, Artic Silver) when you swap the fan.

It came with a 60GB 7200rpm drive! It also has ATI 9600 video with 64MB RAM.sktn77a wrote:A 7200RPM HDD is probably the best bang-for-the-buck upgrade, performance wise.

So it does! It looks like it's pretty much maxed our right now, then. A 2.0 or 2.1GHz might help a little but for the additional $150-$200, you could sell the T42 and get a faster thinkpad.underclocker wrote:
