2378FVU
2378FVU
I just discovered this sight and signed up to post. I am very impressed with all of the info. I've already found. Unfortunately I ordered the 2378FVU on Friday before I figured out about this site but I did get a student discount. I ordered a 256mb chip with my TP to make my total RAM 512mb. Should/can I return the 256mb chip and order a 512mb off of crucial.com to make my total 768mb? The 256mb chip was an extra 65 bucks but for about 30 more I can get the 512mb from crucial.com. What does everyone suggest?
Thanks for all your help.

I think you should. Crucial ram works great, and is priced great. If you have no problems taking off your order, i'd do it. Call them and see if they've shipped it yet. If they haven't they should be able to take it off your order. You may not need the extra ram, but you can never really have too much.
I think buying RAM from IBM is unnecessarily expensive.
I ordered my ThinkPad with just the 256MB base RAM and upgraded to 768MB with this:

It's a bit cheaper than Crucial plus you get free 2nd day shipping.

A few weeks ago (when I bought my 2378FVU), IBM had 512MB for $99, it looks like they've 'run out' on that deal though. A little cheaper than getting it through crucial. If it wasn't for this deal and the Visa discount, I would have gotten it through Bill.
It also looks like IBM's dropped their price of the 2378FVU $50, down to $1799.

Plink,
Why? Who knows!
If you check the IBM EDU sales pages, you'll see that the average discount on "standard" Thinkpads is between 20% and 25% for CA students enrolled at one of the state or community colleges:
https://www-1.ibm.com/shop/pc/personalp ... &instock=y (There's THREE pages of offerings, from T41s to X31s.)
IIRC in CA the largest discounts are enjoyed by Harvey Mudd students, closely followed by Stanford.

James
If you're at one of the UC or CALState campuses, then you would come under the state's master agreement with IBM and qualify for a substantial discount. That being said, the fact remains that if you go to the bookstore at UCSD you'll pay more for an in-stock Thinkpad than for the same unit at the CSFresno bookstore.Plinkerton wrote:Yeah. I'm curious about the student discount too. They only took a hundred bucks off mine, because they said my school wasn't in the database, even though it's a VERY well known university of california.

$100 isn't too bad considering the 2378FVU is already heavily discounted. Try comparing it to similar models that aren't 2378 models.quink wrote:IBM's educational discounts suck. I am at a calstate and my school was only able to get me ~100$ discount over the normal 'retail' cost. Talk about worthless.(I wanted the 2378-fvu)
How much kinder do they need to be?quink wrote:True. It'd be nice if IBM was a little bit more kind to students. All i want is 14" sxga and ibm quality. Gonna have to pay a lot for that.
I already posted the CA EDU webpage and the discounts for the "standard" units is between $400 and $600, i.e. 20% to 25% and more!
2374-4WU, $2,529.00 retail, $1,947.33 after EDU discount.
You can also get a 2378ENU "bare-bones" unit for $1358!

Simple, if there's no sales tax in your state then you certainly needn't pay one. Or, if your state has a special tax relief period for certain technology products (laptops, desktops, monitors, printers, etc.) then these purchases are tax exempt during this period. You'll often see this tax exemption in effect just at the start of a new school year.quink wrote:no tax? How'd you manage that?

How do you get a barebone? If I try to add a barebone to the card it sends me to the configuration page where it already has hdd, optical drive, RAM
etc. added and I can only change them, but not remove them. I called them and they said that they would not ship a Thinkpad without hdd, OS etc.
I am in Maryland. May be there is a tax relief for Maryland as James has mentioned. I had found a IBM website for educational purchases and it was advertised as $1664 (10% of list price at that time). I called a sales rep and told him about it. He thought there must be an error since no more than 5% can be discounted from list price, which was about $1850 at that time. But apparently he said it had to be honored since it was advertised as such.quink wrote:no tax? How'd you manage that? My school told me (about a month ago before they dropped the price) $1799 + 239$ for warranty.
I would have jumped on 1664 at that time with free shipping and no tax. They offer you can discount on thinkpad protection?
I just went back to that website and the price has gone up to $17xx again.
I just got lucky I suppose. Sometimes this things happen I guess.
I am just trying to figure out if its worth buying this model now(my favorite out of all available at the moment) or if its far enough in that I am past the mid-point in the delay between releases. i.e. if they release a new model every 6 months and we are 3 months in its owrht waiting 3 months(in my opinion) to get the new models.
