Automatic shutdown/poweroff and USB ports not working

#1 Post by ionak » Wed Sep 19, 2007 12:49 pm

Thinkpad T43p - 2687D5U / Windows XP (Prof)

I was wondering if you could help me out.

1: My computer won't automatically shut down. After I've clicked shutdown on the screen, the computer says that it's shutting down, but then the entire screen goes blank (with only the mouse cursor visible) and stays there. I need to then physically press the power button to shut down the computer.

2: Even when I click on restart, the system goes into the same 'blank screen' state and stays there.

3: My USB ports don't seem to be working, although PC Doctor etc can't diagnose anything wrong with them. I can't get the system to recognize any device plugged into the USB port.

Thank you for taking the time.

hmm, that's pretty weird. Boot into safe mode and then shutdown from there. If that works then i'd say it's some software not shutting down properly.

Also check the Event Viewer and see what's in there around that time.

Did you try to restory the operatesystem to factry mode? If you have done this before and no luck, there must be something wrong with the mainboard, such as southbrigde.

The 2 problems could be related. Look in the event log and see if there is a message from a failing device.

Sounds like a software problem.
Either try a live linux cd such as Puppy Linux http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=1 and see if the USB works or backup your data and restore to factory condition.
