Create Recovery Discs problem

#1 Post by uvaeer » Thu Sep 20, 2007 6:56 pm

I've been trying to Create Recovery Discs with my Thinkpad so I can install the factory installed software on a new Hitachi 7k100. I made the first 3 discs (the startup and discs 1 and 2) without a hitch, but since then, any disc I've tried (I've used three different brands, at least 20 of them), the program does "premastering" then it displays the following:

title: "Create Recovery Discs"
"Error writing data to disc. Data was not successfully stored on the disc currently in your drive. This disc may no longer be used. Click OK, then, insert a new disc when prompted.

How should I proceed? I'm out of warranty, so not sure if I can/want to spend the $45 to get the discs from Lenovo. I saw the instructions of copying the I386 folder and something about slipstreaming XP and Service Pack, but I don't have an original XP CD. Can I use anyone's CD and then use the registration key found under the laptop? Does anyone have some discs I can get? Thanks!

You could try downloading the Rescue and Recovery software from the Lenovo site and creating discs using that program.

Alternatively (and possibly easier), I have T42 recovery CDs. Send me a PM if you need them...

What you have seen might be the thread: How to Fresh Install Win XP (Step-by-Step Guide) which points to this site which is unfortunately no longer available... :-( But: I have a PDF'ed version of the latter site; let me know if you want a copy via e-mail (and provide me with an e-mail address in such case). Hey; I just discovered that the guide is still available in some archive site; get it here.

Still, I wonder why the original site has been taken down?? Well, that's life!

Best regards,

Johan

The archive site's copy only gets to Stage 6.
Johan has kindly provided me with a pdf file of the full document, originated by J Haislet.
Are there any copyright isues if this pdf is hosted on slideshare.net for anyone to download?
