More T40 Problems...This time its the Wireless
Hello!
Last time I had a question for you guys were really helpful and I am hoping you can help again.
I have an IBM Thinkpad T40 2374 with 1024 DDR running Windows XP SP2 + all updates.
If I use the "Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter" which is only capable of 802.11b to connect to my home network, something very strange happens. If I attempt to copy a file over the network, the laptop on the wireless drops off and comes back on. This obviously stops the file transfer and is a royal pain in the butt.
Since the problem started I have reformatted and reinstalled Windows and it is still doing it. The driver version is: 1.2.4.41
What would cause it to jump off the wireless like that? It doesn't happen when I use my PCMCIA adapter card but that thing drains the battery on the laptop very fast.
Any help again, would be most appreciated!
-Sebastian.

Thanks Andy... I did try that and it didn't solve the problem. I don't know if its software or hardware. All I know is it's not the networking because that would crap out if it were PCMCIA or MiniPCI.andyP wrote:this may help if you haven't already done it; in the advanced properties of your network card, set power management to best network performance.
Still searching for an answer to this one...

Go into the wireless settings and make sure "802.11x authentication" is not checked. This shouldn't be an issue with SP2 but then, you shouldn't be having this problem, either!

the drivers you listed, sound old. They are like 10.x.x.x now.
Switch your router to 802.11B mode ONLY and see if that helps
Bring the system closer to the router, interference?

Your driver is the same one I'm using in my T41... in fact my card won't work with newer drivers and 1.2.4.41 (2/28/2005) works flawlessly for me.
However I also had to uninstall Access Connections before it would work properly. You didn't mention if you were using Win XP or Access Connections to control the wireless...
Disclaimer: I am not saying there is anything wrong with Access Connections, it just has never worked well on my machine... especially after I upgraded to SP2.
BTW: I experienced the same problem as you before uninstalling AC and rolling back driver, connection would drop every 3 minutes or so and then reconnect.

Well something is very strange in my computer...
I just checked my driver properties again and it shows "1.2.4.41" but with a date of 2/28/2005.
When I checked out the available drivers for my card, the only driver with a date of 2/28/2005 is "1.2.4.35". "1.2.4.41" shows a driver date of 7/13/2006, which is definitely the driver date that gave me problems before.
So I think I actually have 1.2.4.35 installed but have no clue why it is showing 1.2.4.41 unless it didn't register during my last install.
So what I am suggesting is that you roll back to the 2005 dated driver and try that...it should 1.2.4.35. That is what I did to fix my problems (notwithstanding the seeming contradiction in my driver properties box, 1.2.4.41 cannot have a date of 2/28/2005).
I would go and reinstall my driver again but things are running perfectly for me so I don't want to mess with it right now... I would try the older driver (2/28/2005 date) and see if it fixes the problem.
