T42P - Made in Japan? Oddity or the norm?

#1 Post by hopewellz » Tue Sep 25, 2007 7:06 pm

My new to me T42p was made in Japan. I thought Lenovo made thier modern notebooks in China? Am I mistaken? Where was your T4x made? Thanks!

I don't think the T4x series were ever made in Japan - always China. The vast majority were drop shipped directly to the end user from Hong Kong. Not sure what you have or where you got it from but you appear to have an oddity.... :?

I will get a picture up as soon as my camera charges. I feel pretty special then if this is out of the norm!

On the bottom label above the bluetooth mac address it reads:

My T40 is Made in UK :)
...with Made in Thailand keyboard.

For comparison I also have T40p Made in China, keyboard the same.

Plastic "from" China is worse. On little pressure it can cave in a bit. You can also hear the sound of changing it's structure (like an old door opening). Keyboard is more hard, from Thailand is more soft.

Summarise, I'll never buy an IBM from China.

I'll never buy an IBM from China.
Usually you don't know it when purchasing.

I have a T43 made in China and an A31p made in the UK. The T43 feels more sturdy, no flex whatsoever. The A31p has a little flex on the LCD bezel as well as the keyboard bezel (due to its design and age I guess) Overall, they are both extremely well built machines!

Not a big deal to me where they are made. I suppose Thinkpads assembled in USA/Mexico/Japan/UK are also made of different components which are made in China/Japan/Thailand etc

Interesting, I didn't realise that T42's were still being made when Lenovo appeared on the scene (and started to put their name on the labels).

I had thought it started during the T43 phase..

Regards.

(T43 with "Lenovo" on the bottom, but also on the LCD bezel, next to "T43"!)... Made in China of course

It's interesting to see a Lenovo sticker and "Manufactured by IBM" at the same time. My T43 has an IBM sticker and "Manufactured for Lenovo" at the bottom.

When is the manufacture date of your T42?

Well, the T43 was announced in May'2005 if i remember correctly.

The Lenovo/IBM deal was announced about one month after that.

So it was an awkward position, as T42/T42p/T42s manufacturing was still in full swing.

In fact, for a LONG time after Lenovo acquired IBM's brand, the T43 machines here in Hong Kong was still branded under IBM on the LCD cover.

(Proud owner of Lenovo T42s 2373-K5H ==> just extended my warranty to its full 5 years, betting on Win'XP).
