ipod nano not detected
ipod nano not detected
I volunteered to help a friend load some tunes onto their ipod nano (2G), but my TP40p doesn't recognize it at all. At first, I just plugged the darn thing in, but the USB icon doesn't even list it. Then I tried installing iTunes7 first, and then plugging in the ipod, but it still isn't recognized. Does anyone have a clue what the problem is?

Not sure what the problem is - my daughter's ipod worked just fine on a T40 with XP PRO. Do you have SP2 installed?

Other USB devices work just fine. I use several flash drives all the time. Meanwhile I had the opportunity to try the ipod on a Sony laptop; same problem! The ipod "repsponds" (display/menu lights up) when it's plugged in the TP or the Sony, and it will "charge" OK. But it isn't detected by the OS.

Sounds like something wrong with the ipod or the installation software you are using. Are you downloading iTunes from the web or using the version that came on the CD with the ipod?

I used the download from the web. My friend left me "everything" with the ipod, but there wasn't any CD this time. Good point. Worth a try digging up that CD.sktn77a wrote:Are you downloading iTunes from the web or using the version that came on the CD with the ipod?

Won't work that way. There's only one USB connector to the ipod used for charging/transfers.GomJabbar wrote:...but if you can plug the Nano into a charger at the same time that you connect to the notebook, maybe this would work.

Thanks for that. I did let the ipod charge when I first started with this process (it needed to charge anyway). But it still made no difference after full charge.SMA wrote:Here is from the apple web site:
If your computer doesn't seem to recognize your connected iPod , wait about 30 minutes to allow the iPod battery to charge before going further.

Are there any other USB devices already plugged in and operating?
The Nano only implements a subset of the USB interoperability design, and does not play well with other USB devices on the same hub. I have never had a problem with the Nano not being recognized, but when it is installed, forget about using your USB printer or a USB flash memory when connected to the same hub.
Like many computers, the T40 series use some of the USB hub ports for other internal devices (not sure which, but I suspect the Bluetooth/Modem??). So it may not be possible to disconnect everything else from the same hub branch level.

Thanks to all for your help. Problem is SOLVED! Apparently, the problem was the ipod. It needed a reset. I got the "secret procedure" after speaking with another user who spoke to an Apple tech directly. Now, only if I knew that a "reset" was what I needed to look for in the first place! Grrrrrr.

same thing seems to be happening to me on my t42. Reset hasn't worked (you're talking about turning the hold on, off and then pressing the menu and middle button for 6 seconds?)...it just gives a "USB device not recognized"
note: the ipod works fine in many other pcs, tested on three macbooks and one hp, the mac users making fun of my ibm the entire time.

That *is* embarrassing to witness that the t42 is not cooperating! The only other solution you may have (according to the Apple support pages) is to update or re-install the software on the ipod.rayman wrote:same thing seems to be happening to me on my t42. ... note: the ipod works fine in many other pcs, tested on three macbooks and one hp, the mac users making fun of my ibm the entire time.

Well I fixed it for my laptop. I uninstalled the USB 2.0 Host Controller from device manager. Windows (surprisingly) didn't reinstall it after multiple reboots. Thus, my ipod now works fine..along with an external 2.5" usb-powered hd I have that wouldn't work. The only problem is that the items now only transfer at 1.1 speed, but working is better than nothing.
Of course, this is the least of my worries as I am still suffering from the motherboard flex problem (going on 1 year now). In fact, my laptop has frozen twice trying to write this. I just can't bring myself to replace my t42 though.

Since you unistalled USB 2 support.. isn't there a way to force a re-install of the drivers needed? It's a shame to drop to 1.1 speeds! Regarding the flex-problem.. I seem to recall that it somehow affected the USB ports too.
