HELP "unmountable boot volume" +SMART FAILURE

Hello everybody,

i have a T42, when i want to boot him, i have a blue screen and the message "unmountable boot volume", i have to to reboot and after many trials XP launch.

i did some researches about it, and it seems that i have to repair the MBR with the microsoft recovery console wich is in the install cd of XP.

But this cd is not delivered with IBM, so what are the alternatives solution (except format) ?

EDIT: i did a drive fitness test with ultimate boot cd and it gave me this :

Serial number : KBDJAEWR

Failure code : 0x72 -Defective Device. S.M.A.R.T Failure

Technical result code : 72026CD2

my HDD is out ?

The IBM recommended solution is to press F11 at bootup and go into Rescue and Recovery. Once there you can back up your data to a CD or a USB hard drive/flash drive, etc. Then you can restore the computer to factory condition. Once that is completed you can restore your data and go on computing.

That is like shooting a squirrel with an elephant gun.

I would proceed by downloading the ultimate boot cd http://www.ultimatebootcd.com and running the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test. If that passes then get a Windows XP install cd and boot to it, Press R at the prompt and go to the recovery console. Type

Code: Select all

chkdsk /r

at the prompt and hit enter. Let it run until it is com[pleted, it may take a while.
This should get you bootable.

ok, thanks, so the best solution is to get an xp pro install cd ( i already did a fitness with access IBM) ?

just to say that i managed to use my laptop with knoppix live cd (thanks linux), now i'm still using it, so it's an alternative solution

Yes, your hdd is going out.
I would recommend making a set of restore discs if you still can and saving any data you want to keep.
After you get another hdd you can run the restore discs you made and put your data back on.

Get the XP Recovery Console CD. Its a 7.9 / 8.x MB download that contains the Pre-Installation environment that helps you fix the
MOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME issue. (i've had it several times before on my i9300).

Look for it online and you will find it.

I usually see this error when CHKDSK needs to be run. Most times CHKDSK fixes the problem.

Boot from the XP CD and go into the recovery console.

Type CHKDSK /?. Look for the switch that repairs the drive and let it run. It is P or F.

However with a SMART failure I would look towards a new hard drive. Make a backup immediately.

Yeah, chkdsk /r will probably fix the "Unmountable boot volume" temporarily but with the SMART failure i would be looking for a new drive, fast. Save your data while you can.

Hello everybody,
i'm newby here, i had the same problem and as i fortunally could solve the problem i decided to register and to give "my" procedure to solve the problem of UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

First of all, you must have as a reflex to rescue your data before doing any manipulations with windows and begin to start and stop yor hard drive thousand times.

Once your folders and files are backuped, you can start to repair windows.
I was looking at many forums dealig with the same problem.. finally i come soudainly here. Sometimes it is good to collect many ideas to build your own technique to solve problems.
Moderator carbon_unit adviced you to scan your hard drive with a bootable, i have done this with a bootable PC doctor. It will send you an error, thats for sure. But don't worry as me

So, to solve my problem, i proceed as follow :
1) I startup the machine and then i enter the Thinkvantage to access options.
2) as said carbon_unit, i pressed F11 to access the rescue recovery part. Sometimes it sucessufully finished loading the DOS consol commands . But in many times, i received errors before finishing which ends with blue screen(arf i hate that blue screen).
3) Once the load is finished in DOS you will see X: which represents the fat partition(hidden partition), you start to enter a

chkdsk c:

in order to scan you disc(check that you use the letter being your ntfs partition to repare). For my disc, i received error but i didn't realize that, as it showed
"0 KB in bad sectors". So you have to read carefully the scan report.
4) In the report you will see "windows found problems with the file system" . So now you have to FIX these problems with

chkdsk /f c:

that should fix the windows problems and create new logfile which ables the machine to startup correctly.
