T42 showing up as T40 on ibms website?

#1 Post by iiiluisiii » Fri Oct 05, 2007 9:32 pm

I picked up a Used (though looks very well taken care of) T4x Series laptop back in July for $400 on craigslist
Specs are
1gb Ram
80 gig hdd
Dvd Rom
Ati 7500
Wifi (cisco 11 mbps)
Gigabit lan
Pentium M 1.5ghz
And a great battery

Its a great laptop..but when i go to ibms website it shows up as a T40 but the front says its a T42 (bottom right of the screen). Is it a possible error or is my laptop a T40? Either way i feel i got a great deal on the laptop seeing as back then they were going for about 5-700 on ebay with lesser specs.

Thanks in advance

Could just be the mainboard was replaced. No big deal since the mainboards are essentially the same with the T-42 having a few more features when shipped from IBM.

T4x has the similar chassis design which can fit in the motherboard ranging from T40 to T43 !

i suspect the only changes is the original T40 sticker had been replaced by T42.

 anyway, there is no big deal, as long as you are happy with it.

What is the machine type/model listed on the bottom of the machine and also in BIOS? (hold down F1 on boot)

Three other ways to determine the motherboard;

1) part number under memory cover

2) CPU-Z memory readings, 133MHz means T40, 166MHz means T41 or T42 (which are the same motherboard)

3) try instaling the IBM APS (Active Protection System) software install package, if it won't install, it's a T40 motherboard

Don't worry too much, T40 is still a good machine after all.

Sounds like either the entire LCD assembly or the LCD bezel or just the "clear plate" was swapped from a T42.

Sorry to hear this. With those spec's it sounds like a fair deal anyway.

The good news is you're now part of a great forum.

the most easiest way is to swap the T42 clear plate.
