7k100 100GB T41-compatibility and related questions

#1 Post by hydrostarr » Mon Oct 08, 2007 11:30 am

Is the Hitachi Travelstar 7k100 100GB drive compatible with my T41 2378DHU? Will it also work in the my ultraslim bay?

I currently use a 7k100 80GB drive and it seems to work fine. However, I'm getting suspect of its age, and I also want a storage-capacity upgrade, hence the additional purchase.

Are there any 7k100 PATA drives bigger than 100GB? The only 100GB+ drives I see are SATA only (which will presumably not work with my T41).

I also notice there's an E7K100 in addition to the 7K100, but I don't understand the difference. Does anyone else? Is there any reason for me to by an E7K100 over the 7K100?

Finally, I see that 100GB 7k100's are going for $100 or so:

Does anyone know of a lower-priced source?

Thanks for any help,
-Matt

Yes, yes, no, extended duty, I use Newegg regardless of price because of their service. Turns out they're usually the cheapest retail price anyway.

the biggest 7200RPM 2.5 PATA drive is 100GB and yes it will work in the UltraBay Slim HD Adapter. The SATA drives wont work in your T41 as you stated.

I also compared them side by side nad i have no idea what's different either.

As for the price, probably not since even newegg sells it for $100.

Great info, thanks.

What the E7K100 "extended duty" (if I read Harryc's post correctly) attribute mean? Is it basically spec-ed to last longer and/or perform better under heavy load? (I'm having trouble finding any specific verbiage clarifying this on the web.) If so, I'm wondering why I would not buy an E7k100 over a regular 7k100.

I should clarify: it appears I can get an E7k100 for about the same price as a 7k100 (although newegg.com doesn't appear to provide an E7k100 yet).

When I read the data sheet for it that is basically what I got out of it.

The E7K100 is for blade servers. Take a look at the the following threads:

The recommendation is to stick to the 7K100 for laptop use.

I own both 60G E7K100 and a 100GB 7K100. I first bought the E7K100 and I could tell you the drive makes more noise than the 7K100. Supposedly both drives are the same, but the E7K100 must operate at a lower ambient temperature (hence it's use for blade servers where there should be AC in the room). The E7K100 do not support power saving features whereas the 7K100 does.

I dumped the E7K100 on a USB 2.0 enclosure and then bought the 7K100.

I do not recommend you the E7K100, go for the normal 7K100.

It may be a silly question but.. what do the 3 letters (after k) mean? I thought they refered to the capacity, which would actually make perfect sense but then I found out I was wrong.

For example, A Travelstar 5K120 can be a 100GB hard drive or a 120GB one

5K120 100GB: HTS541210H9AT00
5k120 120GB: HTS541212H9AT00

I suppose the bold letters can be replaced as 80, 60, 40 or 16 as well
