My Thinkpad gone bye2?

#1 Post by altious » Sat Oct 13, 2007 8:19 am

Hello guys,

I have a Thinkpad T42p Which I bought in the year 2004
Until now it has been working perfectly. Usually I turn on my computer for a couple of days without turning off. However, one day I came back discover that my computer was in a safe mode, normal mode options page. I tried to restart it and it came back to the same menu. Then I tried going into the safe mode, but it just stuck and didn't run for many hours. I try again in normal mode and it goes into windows XP chkdsk verifying my hdd. Then it found error messages like :
File Record Segment 7000-20768 is unreadable.

And It can't boot into windows. I tried restoring with rapid restore it failed in the middle of the task. I was googling for it and read that it might be my HDD has bad sector?
Is it true? How can I fix it? or should I try to claim warranty for it?

Anyway hope anyone can help, thanks

If it's under warranty call for a new hard drive.

Try running the diagnostics in PC Doctor for DOS, or one of the following hard drive diagnostic utilities.

PC Doctor for DOS bootable CD - ThinkPad

Hitachi Drive Fitness Test

Fujitsu Diagnostic Tool and Erase Utility

Samsung HUTIL

From reading your post, it does sound like the hard drive has failed.

Files can get corrupted with out the drive being bad. Try disc doctor but if it comes back OK, you may just need to do a factory recovery from your hard drive's hidden partition. Try to back up all your data files from safe mode first.

Alternatively, if your computer is still under warranty, call IBM immediately and get the hard drive replaced. Ask them for recovery CDs while you're at it (you'll need them).

Most likely hard drive is dying, get a replacement from service (backup data first using a USB enclosure or similar), since if you send it to service they will replace it but wont recover your data

I would have to agree that the hard drive has failed or is failing. Make a backup immediately. Call Lenovo and explain that the hard drive has failed. You may have a replacement by tomorrow.
