I agree with everyone is saying about IBM's quality and durability, but there are other options out there besides an IBM that can do what it does and still ticking. I love my IBM and probably will stay IBM for life, but I have used my dad's Panasonic toughbook a lot and that is on par if not better in terms of solid feel and reliability.

I have had several thinkpads dating back to my old Thinkpad 770. About 3.5yrs ago I decided I wanted to pickup a T series as I had 2 A series and wanted something smaller. I went to ebay and got me a T23 for like $600. When I got it I noticed it had some blemishes on the case and a few white spots on the LCD so I sent it in for repair as it had 2 months left on it. Well they didn't replace the screen on first attempt, neither on second attempt and on third attempt replaced it with another bad screen. So I escalated the problem up on the chain and they sent me a brand new T42p with 3yr warranty and upped the ram to 2gb. WOW.

I still have this laptop. Its terrific. So my warranty is up next week and I decided to call IBM to get the cracked palmrest replaced. They said no problem we will send it right out. I asked them if I could get a new keyboard and they said sure, sending that too. I was like wow. How about a new screen and top casing since mine is a little dim and the top casing has some scratches. They said sure no problem. Got all the parts now. I can't believe how easy it was. I was so happy I decided to extend my warranty to 5yrs for $199.

Very happy with this thinkpad. Its a 2373-KTU and is pretty fast for being so old.

What do I love about this thinkpad besides the great warranty?

- 21W Dothan 2ghz Pentium M cpu. Fast and low voltage. New cpus are 35w.

- Slim and great looking

- Has wifi and bluetooth

- Great resolution screen

- Awesome keyboard

- Long battery life. With power saving on I get like 9hrs with ultrabay slim battery and 9 cell.

So basically the T42p is the best thinkpad ever. I await its successor.
i can't belive this. ibm replace it ? ibm is not easy to play . PM me please i have couple of problem with mine too. i can try to call chain if you can give me the number .

Agreed, Panasonic is another option beside IBM.
so far, my Panasonic W5 12' notebook is working in superb condition, with optical drive built in which is less than 1.2kg.

True Toughbooks are durable as heck. For specialised applications (police, mil-spec, etc) they do the job well, but for a high price.

If it's coming out of my budget then it's a ThinkPad. End of Story.

For my point of view, I haven't a lot of experience with other laptops or different manufacturers but can I say-

a) IBM/Lenovo support has been excellent, the 3 or 4 times I have contacted them.

b) The best thing wrt the laptops is this forum (Thinkpads.com) I have not seen the level of comments, thoughts, ideas and general assistance elsewhere. Really helpful! Thanks to Bill, for running it, and to the community for their assistance. I do not think that my laptop would be half as good without it!

Also, the W series (Panasonic's lightest line) currently has the same super low resolution as the Thinkpad X series. Because of this, even if I could afford a Panasonic W5, I would still not buy one. Hopefully both Panasonic and Lenovo will upgrade from 1024x768 to at least 1280x800 soon.

I'm not familiar with X series ThinkPads. But I remember you can configure them with SXGA+ panels. Is that right?

What about the IPS screens on X series? Are they only available for XGA resolution?

The only IPS screen in X series was an XGA screen for X41 tablet, and that's no longer in production.

Neither is, for that fact, the SXGA + option for X6 series, although I'm sure some of these will be popping up here and there.

Only for the tablet version, which is about 1 pound heavier than the non-tablet X series. I don't need the tablet functionality.

Not quite true, most of the screens on the X6 tablets, XGA or SXGA+ are IPS (FFS). Some of them were briefly made with TN panels, but apparently the supplies are better now, because all the current models in the Tabook mention FFS.
