Trackpoint Disabled ???

#1 Post by Raindrop » Sun Nov 07, 2004 11:53 am

Have a sort of strange problem. Keep trying to use my Trackpoint in conjunction with the touch pad on my T40. When I go into UltraNav it says that the Trackpoint is disabled in the Bios and to change it in either UltraNav or the Bios settings. When I access the Bios settings it says that the Trackpoint is set on "automatic" and not "disabled" yet when I start up in XP the trackpoint just won't work and stays "grayed out" in the UltraNav????

Anyone else experience this and have suggestions. I don't so much mind the touch pad but would like the use of the trackpoint. I have checked the UltraNav driver and it is the September 2004 version that is the latest on the IBM site.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try the ThinkPad configuration utility in Windows. I believe in windows, it doesn't really depend on the settings in the bios itself.

Thanks for the suggestion but I tried that as well. The Control Panel setting says that the device is working properly, yet the TrackPoint doesn't move ????

I have the same problem with my touch pad, my trackpoint is working correctly. I remember turning off the touch pad in the bios, but there is only an option for the trackpoint.

I have downgraded from bios version 3.21 to 3.16 and 3.13 to no avail. The device is grayed out in the thinkpad configuration utility and the ultranav wizard will not start because it says one of my pointing devices is turned off in the bios..

My thinkpad has been repaired by IBM a while back because the mainboard had died and I'm wondering whether they busted my touch pad or did not connect it right during the repair.

edit: oops, original message date 2004.. oh well, my laptop is a R50p.

If it was serviced recently, it is possible the touchpad isn't plugged in to the motherboard

Thanks for the reply. During the repair they broke my ultrabay port as well (only noticed it after the warranty ran out...), a small metal sheet was bent downwards and is now bent backwards because the cd player was inserted forcefully. This causes the cd player not to fit correctly and it occasionally is not detected/disconnects. It also prevents my laptop from entering suspend.

I'm a bit hesitant to pull my computer apart for a loose cable and a bent metal sheet. The service manual mentions that nylon coated screws can only be used once and perchance every screw is nylon coated. Do you suggest I reuse the screws? A screwkit costs about $50...

maybe

press fn + f8 and enable TP
W500 @ T9900, 7K750, 2GB ITM as TMP
now W500, W700, X301, X120e,T43p
before T23, T40, T43p*2, T61p*3 (I hate Nvidia),
Total solution for absolutely ZERO oscillatory noise in t4x

well I just bit the bullet and opened the laptop...

The trackpoint data cable was not connected to the mainboard. I reattached it and it works great now.
The metal sheet blocking my ultrabay is a big mystery.. I bent it out of the way and the cd slides in nicely now.
