What RAM for T42 ? Tried some, but they didn't work :-(

#1 Post by Jingo » Wed Oct 24, 2007 10:37 am

I am looking for a 1G ram upgrade for my T42, and my brothers T41.

Which ram should we be buy?

These are the one known to work (at least kingston says so): KTM-TP9828/1G
Because of the lower price we went for: KVR333X64SC25/1G
Available here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... C25%252f1G

Both are made by kingston.

Unfortunately they didn't work, the machines simply stalled. :cry: Why?

This is the specs we found: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-41751
PC2700 - 1GB CL2.5 DDR SDRAM SO DIMM

The KVR333X64SC25/1G we bought had the same specs. :?

Anyone had success installing an ram upgrade?
What was the ram prod.number? Which brand?

Are we really forced to buy those special and more expensive IBM ram?

Any help appreciated.

If you wish, buy (or change to) Crucial CT12864X335

I have no idea of why the Kingston KVR333X64SC25/1G RAM you tell that you purchased won't work in your T42...?? Have you made sure that it is correctly seated? Also, did you verify that you actually received the correct part... what if you indeed ordered the correct RAM, but you received something else by no fault of yours? Things like that may happen...!

I use Crucial CT12864X335 (1GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR PC2700, unbuffered, non-ECC, DDR333, 2.5 V, CL2.5) in my T42; it has worked perfectly for two years. Available at $76 from Newegg (by the way, look for further discount via coupons; read more, here). In principle you also ought to be able to purchase Transcend 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700), type TS128MSD64V3A priced at $ 68 - this stick should work in T42's, according to upgrading ram/memory on a T42, 2378.

You might also want to read the thread of yesterday in this forum: PC3200 on T42? - that could perhaps lead to lower prices? Finally/additionally: Searching the outstanding archives of this forum (e.g. for "T42 RAM upgrade") may no doubt provide you with more information on RAM and problems and solutions.

Good luck with this mystery! :-)

PS: If you find better deals on 1 GB RAM for T42's, please share, here - thanks.

Best regards,

Johan

Thanks for quick reply.

Yes, I did check part number. I tried mounting/demounting the ram several times, I'm sure it was seated properly.
Actually the BIOS recognized the ram block, and reported 1,5GB of ram, but booting into either Linux or WindowsXP stalled while loading the grafical frontend. I think this is wird.

I'm living in Denmark (Århus) and like purchasing the parts here, in case of these troubles they are easily returnable.
The crucial ram is about kr100 more expensive than Kingston's.
Both the Kingston, crucial and transcend have the same specs.. I don't get it. Maybe I'll just have to give it a try.

Is there some kind of configuration for enabling the ram, I should be aware of?

What are the changes I was just unlucky and the parts were broken? I purchased 2 blocks, none worked!

Hi, did you try the new sodimms alone ? maybe it is a compatibility problem with the existing 0.5Gb one. Also you should try swapping slots. i.e putting the new one in the internal slot.
I also bought a no-name 1GB PC2700 sodimm for my T42 in eBay and it works perfectly since 1 year ago...

I buy whatever is on sale. So far, everything has worked. 6-8 different SODIMMS (at different times) in 3 T42s.

I have exactly that Kingston stick in my T42 (3UU), along with the original 512 stick. Not sure why yours isn't working . . . Maybe it's just faulty?

We got it working. But I still don't know why it didn't.

What we did:
* Put the new Kingston KVR333X64SC25/1G in the spare ram slot
* => random freeze. On linux I could use console, but not log into gnome!?

* Disassambled the machine.
* Put the KVR333X64SC25/1G in the slot under the keyboard.
* Worked! :shock:

* Put the original 512 mb in the spare slot on the back of the T4x.
* Worked! :shock:

* Tried putting another KVR333X64SC25/1G in the ram slot on the back. Having 2 KVR333X64SC25/1G = 2 GB
* Didn't work => random freeze.

I totally doesn't understand this... but anyway now it works. Same solution for both the T42 2374 and the T41 2374.

Get memtest86 and run it for a few hours to see if it really worked.

Run it at least overnight, preferably 24 hours. No errors are acceptable.

Well kingston sometimes has issues on some systems but works fine on others.... Try to get Corsair or Crucial, they will work best for you. Am using 1GB Corsair and no problems what so eva.
