windows SP2 problems with startup on t41/t42...

#1 Post by SimonCC » Mon Nov 08, 2004 9:03 am

I have tried installing sp2 on both my t41 and t42 and i get the same problem: although intermitant, on startup the icons on my desktop do not load, neithar does the taskbar, and i cannot access task manager when this happens, other than that all else functions fine but i have chosen to leave it off completely now as bad startups like this leave me no option but to cold shutdown - which i hate doing!!. I installed sp2 with the utmost care, doing defrag b4 hand along with a spyware sweep, i turn firewall and AV off also etc etc. Also i have tried installing sp2 when there is hardly any software on my comp, when there is software it is all sp2 compliant.

So currently sp2 is a no no on my TPs...........any thoughts???

Odd - I'm having a problem that during startup, after I enter my password, my desktop and half of the systray icons load, and then the system hangs for about a minute, doing nothing, then it finishes loading everything. Several other people I know are having the same problem on their ThinkPads. No idea what the cause could be (well, I know it's SP2 related, though).

It seems that SP2 gave the computer bad ideas about how nice it would be to sit around a while during startup. Mine usually does relax for two or three minutes after login...

Sometimes it doesn't show some Systray icons that are supposed to be there as well.

First, SP2 works fine on a T41 and a T42. Done it on both. It works with Norton A/V 2003, Symantec Client Security 2 and Norton Internet Security 2005. All of the above are properly recognized by SP2. I am about to test Norton Internet Security 2003.

Second, I would make sure you update all the IBM drivers and applications. IBM revised most all of them in their goal to be SP2 compliant.

I have had no shutdown problems with all the newest stuff. I did develop a startup problem that was either wireless related or Access Connections related or both. Not wanting to re-install, I took a gamble on Registry First Aid (Rose City Software). That solved the problem - permanently.

Good luck. ... JDHurst

I'm using Symantec Corp 8 AntiVirus...

FIXED!!! - I downloaded Microsoft BootVis and ran the Trace>Optimize System test and my one minute hesitation at startup is gone!!!

Well... according to my experience, I don't think that's a problem on Thinkpad and SP2. My desktop (assembled by myself do have the similar problem before installing SP2, and it's getting worse after installing SP2. Finally I found that that's because of a firewall software (F-Secure). After removing that software, everything works fine now. So maybe you can remove firewall softwares from your computer, and see if it happens again.

Go figure, my T42p (2373KXU) has never ran better. I used to have to wait for several minutes for my T42p to connect to my home Cisco access point, now it takes less than a minute. I am also using Norton AV and Norton's Personal Firewall. Not a problem.

I have seen the same problem on my friend's notebook. I later found out that the dial-up software from his ISP was the cause of the problem. I disabled it and everything worked fine again. So I suggest you run Msconfig and disable the software you doubt one by one. The program that I disabled is called IPMonitor or something like that.

Installed SP2 on a T40 and experienced a short but noticable 5 second delay on the welcome screen. the problem was related to waiting for an ip address. i entered a manual ip address and the delay went away.
