Dead Fan T41p

#1 Post by ranj303 » Fri Oct 26, 2007 12:31 am

Hi everyone,

well after 4 1/2 years of service my thinkpads fan died after making a loud rattle for a week. The exact model no is 2373GEM. The notebook is out of warranty as well but since its been working fine I feel like I can replace the fan myself.

I had a look on http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 46474.html

and according to it for my machine Fan assembly (long) M10
2373-GEx,
the part no is 13R2657

DO I need the long fan assembly or the short fan assembly ?

Am I right or has the FRU no. been superseded ? Also will the part be available on ebay or anywhere else ?
I am in Australia.

thanx all for your reply.

Hi,

Yes. You NEED the long fan (either the M10 or M24 will do). The only T4x that can live with the short fan are those with the radeon
7500 graphics chip, which is not your case.

Note that these fans can be had quite cheap through eBAY. Changing them is also quite easy, as long as you follow the HMM (published in Lenovo's web).

- see this weeks thread on the fan-replacement issue

... check the thread on the same topic, of earlier this week in this forum: T-Series long fan question - there you will also find a link to the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual).

Both Google and eBay gives quite a few hits on 13R2657, so I would say you should still ought to be able to find one.

Recommendation: Search this forum (the T4x) for "fan replacement" and use "Search for all terms" - this will reveal plenty of useful information, if you need more after having read the HMM. The threads T42 replacing fan and heatsink and Questions: Fan Assembly Removal/Installation wil turn up, if you search the archives. Ready, set, go - OK? Good luck! :thumbs-UP:

The job is straightforward as long as you have the right tool. You need a good size 00 Phillips screwdriver. You can get one at a good hardware store or radio shack.

Hi,

Yes, that one from eBAY is the one.
This one is better though :

http://cgi.ebay.es/IBM-Thinkpad-T43-M24 ... dZViewItem

It is better because it is the M24 model, which has a more powerful FAN and more copper on top of the GPU plus wider heatpipe to it. Is the 'improved' model for T43s... note that it *may be* a bit noisier, so I'd only rate it as necessary if you intend to game a lot or plan on overclocking the GPU

That's the same IBM part number as the one in the listing that FTC posted. If I were you I'd consider posting a wanted to buy thread in the Marketplace and see if you can find a better deal than that one though. Many of the members here who would be able to post to Australia (well at least those I've dealt with) don't charge excessive postage.
