Having a problem with my thinkpad t42 screen.

#1 Post by np012 » Tue Oct 30, 2007 1:25 am

I originally had a problem with a fan error, after getting the fan and installing it. I booted up my computer only to find that my screen was off-pixelated (it had random strewn colors). This quickly deteriorated into the ibm logo showing up on bootup then my screen going black all together. The image is not there(an inverter problem) the screen just goes black sometimes the backlight is on sometimes its off. It will occasionally randomly just pop up my windows log-in screen with off-pixelated color or normal, but it quickly disappears. I attempted to log-on to see if my screen was just busted but my computer was still working. The keypad did not register anything. Anyone have any ideas of what it could be?

I couldn't discern what my problem was from that thread.

My computer doesn't shut off spontaneously. If I press down on my keyboard bezel (on the right of the top right of my touchpad) sometimes the screen will flash up and I can use it for a few moments before it goes black again.

A number of T4x users have experienced similar problems that manifest themselves in different ways. The heart of the problem is that the ATI Graphics adapter chip uses a BGA (Ball Grid Array) connection. Over time, especially for users that tend to pick up their ThinkPad by one corner, the flexing of the motherboard breaks some of the solder connections to the BGA chip. By pressing down on the chip, these connections can be restored and the display comes back.

The thread I referred to above has a couple of temporary and permanent fixes, but for most users, a motherboard replacement is required.
