How to erase data from a dead T20?

#1 Post by MJC » Tue Nov 09, 2004 4:22 pm

I have a T20 that died. I have to send the laptop back to the credit card/insurance company for full credit; problem is since there is no way of turning it on, how can I erase the data from the HD?

TIA - MJC

Put it in a USB enclosure or use a 3.5"->2.5" adapter to connect it to your desktop computer's IDE controller, then erase it with appropriate software (just formatting is not enough). If you want to connect it to your desktop computer's IDE controller, you could use the freeware HDDerase to do the job:

So true, the magnet thing definitely does not work on modern drives unless you have one helluva electromagnet. Take a quick run over to your local hospital and ask for a spin in their MRI machine for kicks :D

Hi

I have used autoclave which seems to be pretty good: rather slow though. So you may want to use Dariks boot and nuke or something similar. They all come on the downloadable cd (bottom link here).

All kept on 1 handy cd........just incase .......

BTW: The ISO download is about 175 megs!

My T20 has the same symtoms as the above thread about a T21 not powering up. This just happened, all of a sudden - I did not get a chance to do anything. I will try to get the HD out and use and adaper to erase the data.

What a pain, but at least my insurance kicked in and I will get a new TP. I still haven't decided between a X or a T - I understand the T40 is much lighter than the T20, is this correct?.

Anyway thanks for the help. MJC.
