T41 2374-312 Wireless?

#1 Post by ecw » Wed Oct 31, 2007 4:09 pm

Hello,

I am so glad I found this forum. It has loads of good info. I just was given a IBM Thinkpad T41 2374-312 laptop. I know nothing about laptops. This is my first. I had to install a new copy of Windows XP Pro which went well. Everything works fine except I see no Wireless connection anywhere. In the Device Manager I show Intel Pro/1000 MT Mobile working fine. There is an Unknown Device (says PCI Modem) and has a "!" on it. If I directly plug a network cable from the router to the Ethernet card it connects fine to the internet. After the install I DL's the Thinkvantage Sytem Update tool to reload anything I missed.

I guess my question(s) is this. Does this model have built in Wireless? If so, do I have to reinstall something first? Everything I have read points to yes. I am desperate to connect wirelessly. Can anyone help? TIA

PS,
Is there a way to disable the "auto clicking" of the touchpad when "hovering" over a link or button?

Lenovo model specification wrote:Product: ThinkPad T41 2374-312 [change]

Operating system: All [change]

Original description: Based on 2374-8RU: P M 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD(slim), Wireless upgradeable(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro
So, it did not ship with a WiFi card installed, but it has the antennas in the LCD assembly. As you have acquired yours second hand, its up to you to determine whether a previous owner has fitted a WiFi card.

If you discover it has no Wi Fi card and want to install one, make sure you buy a card which is an IBM/Lenovo OEMed version, otherwise you will not get full integration to the ThinkPad platform and will need to tweak a CMOS memory status value to avoid a BIOS error on bootup.

Cheers,

Bill B.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

You can download a copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T41 from here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46464

This manual contains information on how to take apart your system for minor upgrades such as memory and wireless card, in addition to taking the entire motherboard out. There's also some troubleshooting hints and tips and basic information about your "new" system.

As far as the "auto clicking" is concerned I'm not clear as to exactly what is happening. I've disabled the touchpad on my T41s so that may explain why I'm not familiar with this feature. Taking a guess, you might be able to find a way to disable it in the mouse or pointing device section of Windows Control Panel.

Thanks for the replies. Great advice. I guess I will just get a card. How do I know if the card is "an IBM/Lenovo OEMed version"? If I can't get one of those, is the "tweak" easy to do?

The auto clicking is when I just move the curser over a button for about 2 seconds it will activate the button (ex: Next, Finish or cancel)

Thanks again. :)

Welcome to the forum, be careful, it's a little addictive.

Nice machine.

Again, thanks to all who replied. I have determined that there is no internal card and just decided to go with a Belkin Wireless card that plugs in the bay. It works great. I am now enjoying my new laptop on the web!

I still would like to know how to change the auto clicking when leaving the curser hover over a button too long.
