X31/T40 - Good deal?

#1 Post by MJC » Tue Nov 09, 2004 4:33 pm

I am considering two replacements for my dead T20 - either the T or X series. Here are the numbers:

T40 (72U) - $1325
1.5 PM
512MB
40GB
CD-RW/DVD
Wireless
Warranty until 9/2006

ThinkPad X31 (XX1) w/ Media Slice - $1529
1.6 PM
256
40GB
CD-RW/DVD
Wireless
1 year warranty

To does familiar with these models, other than the obvious size/weight difference, what do you think? Which one is a better value? Are these good deals?

Thanks, MJC.

It comes down to personal choice; not value! Do you need lite weigh? Do you need an optical drive around to use? Do you like the look of the X31 vs. T40? Do you like the size of the of the T40 or would a small screen be better for you? Do you like the dual trackpointing device?

Answer these question and you will have your answer!

i should add that $1325 for a T40 when there are T42's available for a few hundred more, its not that great a deal..

same for the X31..
when an X40 is available..

yeah....i agree wit Bill on the value part. and also kinda agree with HarryWild on your pref part. I'm guessing the part you're stuck at is the specs more over than the general notebook. my personal prefernce has been the T only b/c it's jsut the right balance between mobility and performance at an economical price.

prices not the best. But really think about what you want the computer for. Personally I felt the X40 was way too ultraportable, but the T series was too big. I think the X31 fills the perfect niche... of course that's just me :)

Everyone here is right - you need to get the model that best fits your needs. The X is amazing in that it weighs nothing, runs cool, and has awesome battery life. But, the tradeoff is the smaller screen and it isn't as fast as most T's

The T is great because you can always have an optical drive, the UltraNav, a bigger screen, and better performance. The tradeoff is battery life, heat, and a larger footprint/little more weight.

Either way, based on these prices, I'd get a quote from Bill on a machine and see just how close it would be to get a brand new machine!
