T43 SXGA+ upgrade help, backlight ok but no image

#1 Post by afuiw » Thu Nov 01, 2007 2:04 am

Finally got around to installing the SXGA+ panel into my 1871-64U T43 wth on-board Intel 9xx GMA video card that originally came with XGA.

1. Panel is a 11P8348 (Samsung for T4x)
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46502

2. New cable is 91P6942 straight from IBM

Took my notebook apart and replaced the panel and cable with the above. No go. The LCD backlight goes on and I can control the brightness via the Fn key but no image. Unplugging the "data" cable that plugs into the top of the LCD results in the LCD going all white (i.e. all pixels on).

No problems if I put the original panel and cable back.

Anybody have ideas? Does the on-board video support SXGA?

Thanks!

Have you replaced the inverter as well?

Using the original inverter FRU 27K9972. Seems to support SXGA+?

I have 2 T43s in front of me, one SXGA and one XGA. Both use the same motherboard, 39T0476. The SXGA+ machine has a screen I replaced with one from a T40, and it works fine. BUT, I installed the whole assembly, to make sure that the LCD connector on the back matched the cable, and that the inverter was compatible with panel. I don't know if the panel voltage requirements or pin orientation are the same from T42 to T43. I know that the motherboard outputs are the same.

That looks like an ATI X300 based T43p.

I beginning to think that the problem I have is related to the Intel GMA900 video card I have on board my T43. Checked the tabook.pdf that includes my 1871-64U model and no GMA based notebook is listed with SXGA+.

Does anybody know if the Intel GMA900 can support SXGA+?!

I have 2 machines that use that graphics chip, both R52s, which are VERY similar to T43 machines. Both of those machines are all assembled and ready to sell, so I am not willing to take one apart to attach a different screen. As you can see, I have too many machines, so I need ones to sell, not more to take apart :) . If you look closely at the service manual for the T43 machines. (There are 2 manuals, so look at the one for models that start with a "1") All the machines use the Intel video chip and all have XGA monitors, but on the 15", SXGA+ LCD is available on CTO models, so I would infer that SXGA is possible, but without testing, I cannot be sure. I don't think that is your problem, though. If you don't get the initial IBM screen or the boot screens before windows starts, I think you have a mismatch between cable and inverter, or inverter and panel. Those early screens are VGA.

i'm sure there no thing to do with inverter.

you get a svga+ cable istead of xga cable.
but i'm don't the definition of screen cable is the same with intel and ATI or not.

the card should support it.

from putting in my sxga panel i remember: there was some grounding thing, like a sticker or something, that had to be put into place correctly.

are you sure you have the right cable?

Thanks for everybody's reply so far...

Cable is for SXGA+ panels and is FRU 91P6942 (replaces 91P6787).

What is the "grounding thing"?

I noticed a sticker about the width of the cable holding together the XGA cable and connector on the XGA panel. The SXGA+ cable did not ship with a sticker but I assume this is only for mechanical purposes to prevent the cable from coming loose.

Is it possible I have a bad panel?
