T42, sp2 and usb 2.0 problem
T42, sp2 and usb 2.0 problem
Hi,
Two weeks ago i bought an usb 2.0 memory key (Apacer Handy Steno 1 GB) and the first week it worked properly on my t42 (2373-9xg with xp sp2). But since last monday it doesn't work anymore on my t42. i tried it on my other laptop (a dell inspiron) with a usb 1.1 poort and it works on that laptop (on lower speed, but it works). When i plug the key in the t42 the OS "hangs" for about 10 seconds and than i see either an error message " USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED" or a drive appears on explorer but when i click on the drive nothing happens. I find this very strange especially because i have also a card reader installed (also USB 2.0) and that device works normal.
I've already searched the internet and this forum for similar issues but unfortunately non of the suggestions appear to solve my problem.
I've called the IBM support and they advised me to update my embedded controller program and bios which i did but it didn't help.
I've done the following:
- Uninstal all USB controllers (via device manager) reboot and re-detect the key --> no results.
- Add an entry to my regedit (SotrageDevicePolicy) with DNAME = WrtieProtect and value 0. It worked the first time i attached my device and after that i had the same problem again.
- deinstall sp2, uninstal all USB controllers reboot and re-detect the key --> no results.
- Update the embedded controller program and bios which i did but it didn't help.
- format the usb key in both FAT and FAT32 format --> no result
I'll appreciate any suggestion to solve this problem.
Thanks in advance,
Mark.

You are somehow drawing too much power from the USB bus. I seem to remember getting a similiar message to that when I was using an external USB sound card one time.

mark..
what i would do is try it on an unmodified OS..
in your case, if you have a spare HDD, do a recovery to it and try running the memory key with a clean install..
so far we know:
the memory key appears to be ok..
the thinkpad hardware appears to be ok..
thus, the only thing left is the OS and drivers..

Have you tried both USB2.0 ports?
Also, try booting the laptop up with the USB key in the port.
Once I installed SP2, my top USB port no longer recognizes my Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 on hot-plugin, but it works fine through the bottom port and through the port replicator. Booting with the mouse in the top port does work though. All other USB devices are hot-pluggable in the top.
I've taken the steps you have as well, reinstalled the USB drivers and updated the BIOS. Go figure.

Kenn,
Yes i did try both USB ports and also booting the pc with USB key in the port, i think i almost tried everything except what Bill suggested (a clean install) which sounds plausible but a clean install (never done this before and do not know how to do it) will probably kost me a couple of days (i'm not very technical) in order to return to my current configuration (i've a lot of software installed on my t42). But if nothing else helps maybe i should do it
What i find very strange though is that apparently nobody else in this forum has the same problem en since i didn't modify the OS related software at all (as i said i'm not very technical) and just installed the sp2 so in my perception i should have a standaard (unmodified) OS
Thanks for the reachtions,
Mark.

i don't think reversing the SP2 upgrade really leaves you with the same OS that you had before the SP2 upgrade..
your problem might be related to an app that you installed..
so
what i am thinking is that you need to get back to basics..
a known starting point..
you CAN, of course, backup your whole system..
do the recovery..
test the memory key..
and then restore.. IF you find it still does not work..
i HOPE that you have a spare HDD as this would be a big help to you..
